Stanley Security QDC114 M 689 LH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the QDC114 closer replace an LCN 4040 without re-drilling the door?
Yes. The QDC100 Series shares the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on the existing prep as a straight off-and-on exchange. That is the main reason facilities running a mixed closer fleet pick it for replacements: no new holes, no drop plate hunting, no patching a painted door.
2) What door widths will a QDC114 door closer handle?
Sized 1 through 6, the QDC114 covers interior doors from 30 to 48 inches wide and exterior doors from 32 to 48 inches. Above size 6 territory or on doors wider than 48 inches you are outside what this closer is rated to control, so look at a different solution rather than cranking the spring.
3) Do I have to order a handed QDC114 door closer?
The closer body itself is non-handed and universal mount, so it works pull side or push side without a different part number. Handing shows up on the order form because the QDC114's extra heavy duty hold open arm with compression stop is a handed arm assembly, the same as the handed arms on the QDC116. Pick left or right to match the door.
4) What does the compression stop arm on the QDC114 actually do for me?
The extra heavy duty hold open arm with compression stop does two jobs in one arm: it holds the door open where you set it, and it takes the impact when the door is thrown open instead of letting it slam into a wall or blow out the arm. On abusive openings, loading docks, corridors, maintenance rooms, that stop is what keeps you from replacing the closer every year. It means you do not need a separate overhead stop or floor stop on that opening.
5) Does the Stanley QDC114 hold the door open, and what are my alternatives if I want a non-hold-open arm instead?
The QDC114 carries an extra heavy duty hold open arm with a compression stop. If the opening needs a plain closing arm with no hold open, the Design Hardware 116 and 416 Series are heavy duty closers supplied with a tri-packed non-hold-open arm, the Dormakaba 8616 uses a flat non-hold-open tri-pack arm, and the Accentra 2701 is an architectural closer with a tri-packed non-hold-open arm in sizes 1-6. Hold open on a fire-rated opening is generally not permitted without a listed release device, so confirm the opening before choosing.
6) If I have a narrow reveal or a wall that will not take a compression stop arm, what closer should I use instead of the QDC114?
The QDC114 uses a surface arm with a compression stop, which needs the projection and the backing to work against. Where a projecting arm is a problem, a slide track or jamb track closer keeps the arm tight to the door: the Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a slide track arm standard for pull side mounting, and the Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 heavy duty jamb track closer for frame face, pull side mounting, adjustable size 1-6.
7) Will a Cal-Royal 400 Series work where the QDC114 is specified?
Not if the specification is written to Grade 1. The QDC114 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 at Grade 1 and is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer. If you want to stay with Cal-Royal at Grade 1, the 500S barrier free closer with adjustable back-check and the 700S dual valve sized closer are both Grade 1.
8) I need a barrier free ADA closer - is the QDC114 the right choice or should I look at something else?
The QDC114 is offered in a barrier free configuration and meets ANSI A117.1, so it can be used on an accessible opening. Other closers built for reduced opening force include the Cal-Royal N900PBF barrier free Grade 1 hydraulic closer, the Calibre CA4001 adjustable spring tension ADA closer, the Calibre CA9901 tri-pack arm size 2-5 ADA closer, and the Imperial USA TC4300, a Grade 1 heavy duty size 1-6 ADA closer.
9) I am replacing an LCN 4040 - does the Stanley QDC114 fit the existing holes, and what else retrofits?
The QDC100 series the QDC114 comes from shares the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on without re-prepping the door, and it mounts non-handed on pull or push side for wood, aluminum or hollow metal doors and frames. If you want to stay within the LCN line for that opening, the LCN 1460T is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer in a powder coat finish.
10) What is the Barrier Free option on the QDC114 and do I need it?
Barrier Free is the ordering option that sets the closer up to meet the reduced opening force requirements under ANSI A117.1, the accessibility standard the series is certified to. Order it for any opening on an accessible route, interior doors in schools, healthcare, government and multi-family common areas. If the door is a service or exterior opening where opening force is not regulated, the standard (None) option is the one to take.
11) Will a QDC114 mount on an aluminum storefront door or only hollow metal?
Mounting covers wood, aluminum and hollow metal doors and frames, and it ships with wood and machine screws plus sex nuts and self-reaming, self-tapping screws as standard. That fastener mix is what lets one box cover a wood door in an apartment corridor and a hollow metal frame on a stairwell without a separate hardware order.
12) What makes a cast iron closer worth it over an aluminum body one?
Cast iron body, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms are what separate the QDC100 from lighter aluminum-body closers. Valves are staked so a screw backed out too far will not dump oil, and the fluid is all-weather so the door does not close slow in January and slam in July. On a low-traffic office door a lighter unit is fine, but for institutional and industrial traffic this is the construction that lasts.
13) What else could I use instead of the Stanley QDC114 for a heavy duty Grade 1 opening?
Close alternatives we carry include the BEST EHD9000 Series extra heavy-duty surface closer with adjustable sizes 1-6, the Sargent 281 Powerglide cast iron closer, the Falcon SC71A heavy-duty surface closer, and the LCN 1460T. All are heavy duty surface mounted units. If you specifically need the built-in compression stop and hold open in one arm, check the arm option on whichever you choose, since several of those peers are listed with non-hold-open arms.
14) I need a hold open closer but not the heavy industrial build. What's a lighter option?
For medium-traffic openings where you still want hold open, the Accentra 51 Series comes with a tri-packed hold open arm and adjustable size 1-6, and the Orca BHDC1958 hold open model uses a tri-packed hold open arm with parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are hold open units without the cast iron industrial build of the QDC114. Step up to the QDC114 when the opening sees abuse and you need the compression stop.
15) Does the QDC114 have delayed action and backcheck?
Back check is standard on the QDC100 Series and delayed action is available as a premium option. Backcheck is the one that matters most on exterior doors in wind, it slows the door before it reaches full open. Delayed action is worth specifying where people are moving carts or beds through, since it holds the door open longer before the close cycle starts.
16) Is there a medium duty Grade 1 closer for interior corridor doors instead of the heavy duty QDC114?
For medium traffic interior openings the Sargent 1131 is a Grade 1 adjustable surface closer for medium-traffic commercial applications, the Norton Rixson 8501A is a Grade 1 medium duty tri-mount closer with adjustable size 1-6 spring, and the BEST HD7000 is a Grade 1 medium duty surface closer with adjustable spring power and backcheck control. The QDC114 stays the choice where the opening is rated for heavy duty institutional or industrial use.
17) Is an Arrow DCN325 a substitute for the Stanley QDC114?
They are not equivalent for the same opening. The QDC114 is a heavy duty closer covering spring sizes 1 through 6 with a full-size metal cover. The Arrow DCN325 is a Grade 1 light duty closer supplied less cover with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm in adjustable sizes 1-6, and the Arrow DCN314 is the same light duty unit limited to sizes 1-4. If you need the cover and the heavier body, stay with the QDC114 class of closer.
18) I need another hold open closer for a matching door - what else comes with a hold open arm?
Besides the QDC114 with its extra heavy duty hold open arm and compression stop, hold open arms are offered on the Accentra 51 Series industrial closer, which is a tri-packed hold open arm closer in sizes 1-6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 hold open closer with parallel bracket, which is a tri-packed hold open arm for 1-3/4 inch doors.
19) My spec calls for a cast iron closer body - which options besides the Stanley QDC114 are cast iron?
The QDC100 family the QDC114 belongs to is built with a cast iron body, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms. In the same construction class, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a cast iron surface closer with heavy duty construction, and the LCN 1261 is a surface closer with cast iron construction and adjustable spring sizes 1-5. By contrast the Falcon SC81A and Sargent 1331 use aluminum bodies.
20) What is the difference between the QDC114 and the BEST HD8000 for a heavy duty exterior door?
Both are Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted closers. The QDC114 comes with an extra heavy duty hold open arm with compression stop, adjusts across spring sizes 1 to 6, and is rated for exterior doors 32 to 48 inches wide with non-handed mounting on pull or push side. The BEST HD8000 Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer in its own arm configurations. Choose on the arm and stop arrangement the opening needs.
21) What finishes does the QDC114 door closer come in?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass, each in left or right hand and with or without the Barrier Free option. All twelve combinations carry the full-size rounded cover. 689 and 690 are the two that usually match existing closers in a commercial building.
