Stanley Security QDC214 F 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door width can a Stanley QDC214 closer handle?
Interior doors from 30 to 48 inches wide, exterior doors from 32 to 48 inches. Spring power adjusts across sizes 1 through 6, so one closer covers a 30 inch office door and a 48 inch exterior entrance without stocking different units. If your opening is wider than 48 inches, this is not the closer for it.
2) Can the QDC214 closer be used on a fire rated door?
The QDC200 Series is UL and cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b, and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4. Note the function though: the QDC214 is a hold-open arm. Hold-open closers are not permitted on fire doors unless the hold-open is released by the fire alarm, so on a labeled opening you want a non-hold-open arm version instead.
3) What does the compression stop on the QDC214 arm do, and do I still need a floor stop?
The heavy duty arm on the QDC214 combines hold-open with a compression stop, so the arm itself absorbs the door at the end of its swing and holds it there. That's the arm you specify when there's no wall or floor stop and the door would otherwise blow back on its hinges, which is the common failure on exterior doors in wind. A separate overhead or floor stop isn't required when the compression stop arm is doing that job.
4) I need a closer like the QDC214 but without hold-open. What should I order instead?
Hold-open is the defining feature of the QDC214 arm, so if you need the door to self-close every time (a fire door, a stairwell, a secured entry), pick a non-hold-open arm closer. The Design Hardware 116 Series and 416 Series are heavy duty closers with tri-packed non-hold-open arms, and the Dormakaba 8916-JT is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a flat non-hold-open arm for pull side frame face mounting.
5) Which closers besides the Stanley QDC214 work on an aluminum storefront door with a narrow top rail?
The QDC200 Series closers accommodate reduced rail heights and are non-handed, which is what makes them workable on narrow top rail doors. The Norton Rixson 1600 Series aluminum storefront closer with tri-style mounting is a Grade 1 heavy duty unit built for that door type, and the Dormakaba 8616 with flat arm is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a flat arm non-hold-open tri-pack configuration, the flat arm being the profile used where the rail is shallow.
6) What is the closest heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer to the Stanley QDC214 if I need a different brand on the same opening?
The Stanley QDC214 is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted closer with an adjustable closer size range of 1 to 6. The BEST HD8000 Series is also a Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted closer, and the Sargent 1431 Powerglide is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer with adjustable spring power. The Falcon SC71A Series is another heavy duty Grade 1 surface mount closer. Any of the three keeps you at Grade 1 heavy duty when the QDC214 is not the brand on the specification.
7) I need a hold open arm closer but not the Stanley QDC214 - what else holds the door open?
The QDC214 uses a heavy duty arm with hold-open and a compression stop. For a hold open arm from another brand, the Accentra 51 Series carries a tri-packed hold open arm with sizes 1 to 6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958HO/PA is a hold open door closer with a tri-packed hold open arm and a parallel bracket. Both give you the hold open function; the arm styles differ from the QDC214 heavy duty arm with compression stop.
8) Is the Arrow DC314 a substitute for the Stanley QDC214 on an exterior entrance?
They are not the same class of closer. The Stanley QDC214 is a heavy duty closer rated for exterior doors 32 to 48 inches wide. The Arrow DC314 is a Grade 1 surface mounted closer at a light duty level, as is the Arrow DCN325 with adjustable spring size 1 to 6. Grade 1 on the Arrow units refers to the certification, not the duty class - for a heavy duty exterior opening, stay with the QDC214 or another heavy duty unit such as the BEST EHD9000 Series with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6.
9) The specification calls for Grade 1 on a fire rated opening - can I swap the Stanley QDC214 for a Grade 2 closer?
No. The Stanley QDC214 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 and ANSI A117.1 and is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer, which does not meet a Grade 1 specification. If you need to move off the QDC214 and hold Grade 1, the Corbin Russwin DC8200 with double lever regular arm and pull side mounting and the Cal-Royal 700S dual valve sized closer with adjustable tube arm are both Grade 1.
10) What mounting screws come with a Stanley QDC200 closer, and do I need sex nuts for a hollow core door?
Wood and machine screws come standard, and sex nuts plus self-reaming, self-tapping screws are standard as well. Sex nuts are what you want through a hollow metal or mineral core door where a wood screw has nothing to bite; the self-drilling screws cover hollow metal frames on a top jamb mount. No separate fastener pack to order.
11) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand QDC214 closer?
No handing to specify. The QDC200 closers are non-handed, and mount pull side or push side, so a property manager standardizing across a building can stock one part number and one finish and cover every door in the fleet. What you do pick is cover style and finish.
12) What finishes and cover options do I specify when ordering a QDC214 closer?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. Each comes with either the F full size cover or the S slim line cover, six combinations in total. 689 is the standard match for aluminum storefront, 690 for bronze anodized entrances. The slim line cover is the one to pick when the closer sits on a shallow top rail or you want less of it showing.
13) Will a QDC214 closer hold up outdoors in cold weather?
Yes. The QDC200 Series uses all-weather fluid and is rated for exterior use on doors 32 to 48 inches wide. All-weather fluid is what keeps the closing speed from going sluggish in winter and racing in summer heat, which is the reason a cheap interior closer starts slamming or failing to latch on an exterior door.
14) Does a Stanley QDC214 have backcheck and delayed action, or are those extra?
A back check valve is standard on the QDC200 Series, and delayed action is offered as an option. Backcheck is what stops the door slamming into the wall when someone throws it open; delayed action matters on healthcare and multi-family openings where someone with a cart or a walker needs extra seconds before the door starts closing.
15) What is the difference between the Stanley QDC214 and a BEST HD8000 or Falcon SC71A heavy duty closer?
All three are Grade 1 heavy duty surface closers. The QDC200 is the one built around reduced rail heights and a slim cover, so it's the pick for narrow top rail and storefront doors. The BEST HD8000 Series and Falcon SC71A Series are heavy duty Grade 1 surface closers as well; BEST also offers the EHD9000 Series in extra heavy duty. If the opening is a standard hollow metal door with a full rail, any of them fit the duty requirement.
16) Can I retrofit a QDC214 onto a door that already has a closer without redrilling?
The QDC200 Series is built with retrofit-compatible features and mounts pull side or push side, so it can pick up existing prep in a lot of replacement work. It ships with wood screws, machine screws, sex nuts and self-drilling screws, which covers most door and frame substrates you'd hit on a swap. Whether it lands exactly on your existing hole pattern depends on what brand came off the door.
17) The opening is interior and low traffic - is there a lighter closer than the Stanley QDC214 heavy duty?
Yes. The QDC214 is a heavy duty Grade 1 closer built for both interior and exterior use. For a lighter interior opening, the BEST HD7000 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty surface mounted closer with adjustable spring power and backcheck control, the Falcon SC81A is a Grade 1 medium duty cast aluminum surface mount closer, and the Sargent 1131 is a Grade 1 medium duty adjustable surface closer for medium-traffic commercial applications. All three stay Grade 1 while dropping the duty class.
18) What is the difference between the Stanley QDC214 and a tri-pack closer like the Dexter DCH1000?
The QDC214 ships with a heavy duty arm with hold-open and compression stop and mounts pull side or push side. A tri-pack closer such as the Dexter DCH1000, a Grade 1 surface closer with tri mount for regular, parallel or top jamb mounting and a full cover, ships with the brackets for all three mounting positions and a non-hold-open arm in the standard configuration. The Arrow DCN314 is another tri-pack regular/parallel arm closer, at light duty with adjustable spring size 1 to 4. Choose the tri-pack when the mounting position is undecided, and the QDC214 arm when the opening needs hold-open and a stop built into the arm.
19) I am standardizing a building on one closer - which alternatives to the Stanley QDC214 cover the same size 1 to 6 adjustment range?
The QDC214 adjusts across closer sizes 1 to 6, which is what lets one part number cover doors from 30 to 48 inches interior and 32 to 48 inches exterior. Other closers with an adjustable 1 to 6 range include the BEST EHD9000 Series extra heavy duty, the Accentra 51 Series with hold open, the Accentra 2701 architectural closer, the Imperial USA TC4300 Series heavy duty ADA closer, and the Norton Rixson 8501A tri-mount Grade 1 closer. A single adjustable range across a facility is what keeps the stocking list short.
20) Is the Arrow DCN500DP drop plate an alternative to the Stanley QDC214?
No. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500, a mounting accessory rather than a closer. The Stanley QDC214 is a complete Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted closer with a heavy duty arm, hold-open and compression stop, supplied with wood and machine screws standard plus sex nuts and self-reaming, self-tapping screws standard. A drop plate is ordered in addition to a closer, never in place of one.
21) I need a delayed action closer for an accessible entrance - how does that compare to the Stanley QDC214?
The QDC200 Series offers delayed action along with a back check valve standard, and carries ANSI A117.1 for accessibility. If you want delayed action from another brand, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958DA/PA is a delayed action closer with a regular arm and parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Orca BHDC2011DA/PA is the same delayed action arrangement in the BHDC2011 Series. Both use a tri-packed non-hold-open arm, so they close and latch rather than standing the door open the way the QDC214 hold-open arm does.
22) Which cast iron body closers compare with the Stanley QDC214 for a high abuse opening?
The QDC214 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial closer with all-weather fluid for interior or exterior use. Where a cast iron body is preferred, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a Grade 1 heavy duty cast iron surface closer, and the LCN 1261 is a cast iron surface mounted closer with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 5 at a light to medium duty level. The LCN 1460T is a Grade 1 commercial heavy duty surface closer in a powder coat finish.
23) Is the QDC214 closer rated for residential use?
It's a commercial-grade unit, heavy duty and ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, intended for high-use commercial openings. It'll work on a residential door, but the spring sizing starts at a commercial door width range (30 inches and up interior), so on a narrow interior house door you're outside what it's sized for.
