Stanley Security QDC119 R 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I swap an LCN 4040 for the Stanley QDC119 without re-prepping the door?
Straight off-and-on. The QDC100 Series shares the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so the existing holes carry over and the door does not need re-prepping. That is the main reason this closer shows up on retrofit jobs in schools and industrial buildings where the original 4040s are worn out but the doors are fine.
2) What door widths will the Stanley QDC119 closer handle?
Interior doors from 30 to 48 inches wide, and exterior doors from 32 to 48 inches. Spring power adjusts across sizes 1 through 6, so one closer covers the range rather than having to order a fixed size per opening. Anything wider than 48 inches is outside what this closer is rated to control.
3) Do I have to order a left-hand and right-hand version of the QDC119 door closer?
No. The QDC119 is non-handed and universal mount, so one part number covers both hands and you can stock a single closer for a whole building. Note the handing exception in the family: QDC116 arms are handed and come with metal covers. The QDC119 with the rounded plastic cover is not.
4) Is the Stanley QDC119 closer fire rated and UL listed?
UL/cUL listed, with UL10c and UL10b listings, and it meets ANSI/BHMA A156.4 plus ANSI A117.1 for accessibility. UL10c is the positive-pressure fire door test, which is what most current building codes reference for fire-rated openings, so the closer can go on a labeled fire door assembly.
5) Can the QDC119 be mounted parallel arm on the push side, or only regular arm?
Both sides. Mounting is pull side or push side, and the design is universal mount, so the same closer works regular arm, top jamb or parallel arm depending on which way the door swings and where the closer has to live. On an out-swinging exterior door you will typically run it parallel arm on the push side to keep it out of the weather.
6) What is the spring stop arm on the QDC119 for, and do I still need a floor or wall stop?
The extra duty arm with spring stop builds the stop into the arm itself, so the arm absorbs the impact at the end of the swing instead of the door slamming into a wall. That is what you want on openings with no room for a wall stop, or where wind catches an exterior door. It is a cushioned stop, not a hold open: the closer still shuts the door every time. The QDC100 family offers 10 arm options across arm and stop types if you need hold open instead.
7) Is a lighter duty closer enough for a low-traffic interior office door, or is the QDC119 needed?
The Stanley QDC119 is built for heavy duty service, with cast iron body, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, and it is the right choice for institutional and industrial traffic. For an interior door that sees light use, lighter Grade 1 options exist: the BEST SL6000 Series is light duty Grade 1, the Norton Rixson 160 Series is a light duty Grade 1 light commercial closer, and the Arrow DC314 in the DC300 Series is a light duty Grade 1 surface closer. The LCN 1250 Series is light duty with adjustable sizes 1 through 5 and all-weather fluid. The QDC119 covers a broader spring range, adjustable size 1 through 6, and door widths of 30 to 48 inches interior and 32 to 48 inches exterior.
8) What is a direct replacement for an LCN 4040 without re-prepping the door?
The Stanley Security QDC119 uses the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on as an off-and-on exchange with no new drilling. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with cast iron body, adjustable size 1 through 6 spring, and non-handed universal mounting for pull side or push side, with the extra duty arm and spring stop. Among LCN peers carried alongside it, the LCN 1460T is the heavy duty closer in the 1460T series, while the LCN 1261 in the 1260 series is light to medium duty with cast iron construction.
9) What should be used instead of the QDC119 when the opening needs a hold open arm?
The QDC119 is furnished with an extra duty arm with spring stop, which stops the door rather than holding it open. For an opening that has to stand open, the Accentra 51 Series has a tri-packed hold open arm with sizes 1 through 6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 HO uses a tri-packed hold open arm with a parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors. If delayed action is the real need rather than hold open, delayed action is available as an option on the Grade 1 QDC100 platform the QDC119 belongs to, and the Orca BHDC1958 DA and BHDC2011 DA are delayed action closers with a regular arm and parallel bracket.
10) Which closer fits an opening where a projecting arm and stop cannot be used and a slide track is required?
The Stanley QDC119 is a surface closer with an extra duty arm and spring stop, mounted pull side or push side. Where a track arm is specified instead, the Corbin Russwin DC5230 in the DC5000 Series is a Grade 1 surface closer with a slide track arm standard and pull side mounting for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dorma 8916-JT in the 8900 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a jamb track and frame face mounting, pull side, adjustable size 1 through 6. Both differ from the QDC119 in arm geometry, not in grade.
11) Does a Grade 2 closer meet the same requirement as the Stanley QDC119?
No. The QDC119 is certified Grade 1 to ANSI/BHMA A156.4, with ANSI A117.1 and UL/cUL listing including UL10c and UL10b, which is what a fire-rated institutional opening is usually specified to. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer, a different certification level. Cal-Royal peers at Grade 1 include the 500S with adjustable back-check and barrier free operation and the 700S in the 700 Series with a dual valve sized body and adjustable tube arm. The Falcon SC91A in the SC90A Series is Grade 3 light duty.
12) Which closers should be compared for an ADA barrier free interior door alongside the Stanley QDC119?
The QDC119 is offered with a Barrier Free option in each of its three finishes, 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass, and it is certified to ANSI A117.1. Comparable barrier free and ADA closers include the Cal-Royal 500S, a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back-check, the Cal-Royal N900PBF in the 900 Door Closer Series, a barrier free Grade 1 hydraulic surface closer, the Calibre CA9901 in the CA9900 Series, a Grade 1 tri-pack arm size 2 through 5 ADA closer, and the Imperial USA TC4300 in the TC4300 Series, a heavy duty size 1 through 6 ADA closer. The QDC119 differs in being non-handed with a cast iron body and the extra duty arm with spring stop.
13) What does the Barrier Free option on the QDC119 door closer actually get me?
Barrier Free is the ADA-oriented build, set up for the reduced opening force accessible openings require, and it can be ordered in any of the three finishes. The standard build is the None option. Both carry the ANSI A117.1 accessibility listing. If the opening is on an accessible route in a school, clinic or public building, specify Barrier Free.
14) Is a cast iron door closer worth it over an aluminum body one for a high traffic entrance?
On an opening that cycles hard, yes. The QDC100 body is cast iron with a cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, and the valves are staked so an adjusting screw backed out too far will not start an oil leak. It runs all-weather fluid, so closing speed holds up through cold snaps on exterior doors. Cast aluminum bodies like the Falcon SC81A are rated medium duty and suit lighter interior traffic.
15) Does the QDC119 closer have delayed action and backcheck, or do I have to order those separately?
A back check valve is standard on the QDC100 Series, and delayed action is available as a performance option. Backcheck is what stops the door being thrown into the wall when wind or a hand shoves it open; delayed action holds the door open longer before it starts to close, which matters on accessible openings and anywhere carts or wheelchairs go through.
16) Is the Stanley QDC119 rated for exterior doors, or interior only?
Both. Exterior openings 32 to 48 inches wide and interior openings 30 to 48 inches are within range, and the all-weather fluid is what makes the exterior use practical, since standard fluid thickens in cold and the door stops latching. The spring stop arm also helps on exterior doors where wind would otherwise slam the leaf past its limit.
17) What is the difference between a tri-pack closer and the QDC119 extra duty arm version?
The QDC100 platform offers two arm types, a tri-pack arm and an extra duty arm, across ten arm options with varying arm and stop types; the QDC119 is the extra duty arm with spring stop. A tri-pack closer ships with the brackets to mount regular, parallel or top jamb from one carton, which is what the Design Hardware 116 Series heavy duty closer, the Design Hardware 416 Series heavy duty closer, the Accentra 2701 in the 2700 Series and the Accentra 1101BF in the 1100 Series all use as a tri-packed non-hold open arm. The extra duty arm on the QDC119 adds a spring stop at the arm, a feature the tri-pack arm does not carry.
18) Is the Arrow DCN500DP parallel drop plate an alternative to a QDC119 closer?
No. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500, a mounting accessory rather than a closer. The Stanley QDC119 is a complete Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted closer with an extra duty arm and spring stop and a full-size rounded plastic cover, adjustable size 1 through 6. If a full closer with a tri-pack arm from Arrow is what is wanted, the Arrow DCN314 is a Grade 1 surface closer, less cover, regular and parallel arm tri-pack, adjustable spring size 1 through 4, and the Arrow DCN325 is the same arrangement with adjustable spring size 1 through 6.
19) Is a cast aluminum closer the same as the cast iron Stanley QDC119?
No, the body material differs. The QDC119 has a cast iron body with a cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, and staked valves that prevent oil leaks from screws being backed out too far. The Falcon SC81A in the SC80A Series and the Falcon SC61A in the SC60A Series are cast aluminum closers, medium duty and light to medium duty respectively, both Grade 1. The Sargent 1331 in the 1331 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty closer with a universal aluminum body. Among cast iron peers, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a Grade 1 heavy duty cast iron closer and the LCN 1261 uses cast iron construction at light to medium duty.
20) What closer suits an aluminum storefront opening rather than the QDC119?
The Stanley QDC119 is specified for commercial door widths of 30 to 48 inches interior and 32 to 48 inches exterior, non-handed, with a full-size rounded plastic cover. For a narrow-stile aluminum storefront, the Norton Rixson 1600 Series in the 1600BC Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty aluminum storefront closer with tri-style mounting, and the Norton Rixson 1601P in the 1600 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty tri-mount closer with 180 degree swing. Those are built around storefront mounting conditions, where the QDC119 is a universal-mount cast iron closer for institutional and industrial openings.
21) Which Dormakaba closers sit below the QDC119 in duty level for standardizing across a building?
The QDC119 is the Grade 1 heavy duty tier, with cast iron construction and adjustable size 1 through 6 spring, suited to institutional and industrial traffic. Within the same brand family, the DORMA 7303 in the 7300 Series is a Grade 1 standard duty surface closer and the Dormakaba 7414 in the 7400 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty closer with size 1 through 4. At the same heavy duty level, the Dormakaba 8616 in the 8600 Series is a Grade 1 closer with a flat non-hold open arm in a tri-pack. A facility can mix these by opening traffic while keeping Grade 1 throughout.
22) What finishes does the QDC119 door closer cover come in?
Three: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass, all with the full-size rounded plastic cover. 689 is the default on most commercial jobs and matches aluminum storefront and hollow metal; 690 is the one to pick when the rest of the door hardware is dark bronze. Each finish is available with or without the Barrier Free option.
23) Is the plastic cover on the QDC119 a problem in a school or other abuse-prone building?
The full-size rounded plastic cover is the standard trim on the QDC119 and it is what gives the closer the LCN 4040 profile for retrofits. If the opening takes real abuse and you want metal, the QDC116 in the same family comes with metal covers, but those arms are handed, so you have to specify hand when you order and you lose the single-SKU stocking advantage.
