The 1/2 inch handles branch circuit and small motor whips; the 4 inch is for large feeder runs into panels, switchgear, or big equipment terminations. Order by the trade size of the liquidtight flexible conduit you are terminating, not by the conductor count.
2) Can I use this Steel City connector with regular flexible metal conduit (Greenfield)?
No. This is a liquidtight connector, built to seal on the PVC jacket of liquidtight flexible metal conduit. Standard unjacketed flexible metal conduit has no jacket for the gland to compress against, so you would get neither a seal nor a proper grip. Use a standard FMC connector for Greenfield and save this one for LFMC.
3) Why use a 90 degree liquid tight connector instead of a straight one?
The 90 degree body turns the conduit right at the enclosure, so you do not need bend radius clearance behind or below the box. That matters most in the 4 inch size, where liquidtight flexible conduit has a large minimum bend radius and a straight connector would force the whip well off the wall. Where you have room to sweep the conduit, a straight connector is simpler; when the box sits tight to a wall, ceiling, or machine frame, the 90 is what fits.
4) Is this connector metal or plastic, and will it hold up outdoors?

Match the knockout to the trade size of the connector: the 4 inch version (LT9400-SC) needs a 4 inch trade size opening, and the 1/2 inch version (LT950-SC) a 1/2 inch opening. On the 4 inch, confirm your enclosure wall has the flat landing area for a fitting that large before you punch it, since a 90 degree malleable iron body of that size carries real weight on the entry.
6) Where is a 90 degree liquid tight connector typically specified on a commercial job?
Motor and equipment terminations in manufacturing plants, warehouse and distribution facilities, commercial building conduit runs, outdoor installations, and municipal or infrastructure work.
