Steel City 6H3 BSS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size conduit or pipe does the Steel City 6H3 B hanger fit?
The Steel City 6H3 B is a conduit and pipe hanger sized for 1-1/2 inch conduit or pipe. Order one per support point; it is sold individually, not in bulk packs.
2) Does the Steel City 6H3 B conduit hanger come with the bolt, or do I have to buy it separately?
The bolt is included. The 6H3 B is supplied as a hanger with bolt, so you get the clamping fastener in the box and only need to provide the anchor or threaded rod hardware for your structure.
3) Is there a stainless steel version of the Steel City 1-1/2 inch conduit hanger for outdoor or corrosive areas?
Two materials are offered: plain steel as the 6H3 B, and stainless steel as the 6H3 BSS. For damp, coastal, washdown, or chemically aggressive locations, specify the 6H3 BSS. Indoor dry runs are normally handled with the standard steel 6H3 B.
4) Which part number do I give my distributor for the Steel City stainless 1-1/2 inch pipe hanger?
Ask for Steel City MPN 6H3 BSS for the stainless steel version, or 6H3 B for the standard steel. Both are the same 1-1/2 inch conduit and pipe hanger with bolt, differing only in material.
5) Will a 1-1/2 inch conduit hanger work on 1-1/2 inch EMT and on 1-1/2 inch rigid conduit?
The 6H3 B is specified by trade size, 1-1/2 inch, which is how both EMT and rigid metal conduit are designated. Note that rigid and IMC have a larger outside diameter than EMT of the same trade size, so if you are mixing systems on one run, match the hanger to the actual conduit type you are supporting rather than assuming one hanger covers both.
6) Are Steel City conduit hangers made in the USA for Buy American jobs?
Country of origin on the 6H3 B conduit hanger is the United States, which is what public-works and federally funded specs usually ask you to document for electrical support hardware.
7) Should I use a conduit hanger with bolt or a one-hole strap for a 1-1/2 inch run?
A one-hole strap pins the conduit flat against a surface. The 6H3 B hanger with bolt wraps the conduit and tightens down with its own bolt, which lets you suspend the run off a rod or beam attachment and leaves a small standoff rather than pressing the pipe tight to the structure. For surface-mounted runs on a wall, a strap is simpler; for overhead suspended 1-1/2 inch runs, use the hanger.
