Steel City HC 101 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What trade sizes does the Steel City HC set screw connector come in?
Nine trade sizes, from 1/2 inch up through 3-1/2 inch: 1/2 (HC 101), 3/4 (HC 102), 1 (HC 103), 1-1/4 (HC 104), 1-1/2 (HC 105), 2 (HC 106), 2-1/2 (HC 107), 3 (HC 108) and 3-1/2 inch (HC 109). Order by the conduit trade size you are terminating, not by the outside diameter of the pipe.
2) Can I use a Steel City HC connector on EMT, or is it only for rigid and IMC?
The HC series is a rigid/IMC set screw connector, so it is sized and built for rigid metal conduit and intermediate metal conduit. EMT has a thinner wall and a different outside diameter at the same trade size, so an HC fitting will not seat correctly on it. Use an EMT set screw connector for EMT runs and keep the HC connectors on the rigid and IMC.
3) Do I need to thread the conduit to use this connector?
No. It clamps to the conduit with a set screw, so you cut the pipe square, ream it, slide the connector on and tighten the screw. That is the reason crews reach for it on retrofit work, where there is no room to rotate a threaded coupling or re-thread an existing rigid run in place.
4) Is the Steel City HC connector steel or die cast zinc?
Steel. If your spec or inspector calls out steel fittings rather than zinc die cast, the HC series meets that on material. Steel bodies also hold up better to being struck or over-torqued on larger trade sizes than a cast fitting.
5) Should I use a set screw connector or a threaded rigid coupling on this run?
It comes down to whether you can turn the pipe. A threaded connection is the right call on new work where the conduit can be rotated and you want a fully threaded, wrench-tight joint. A set screw fitting like the HC series is what you use when the conduit is already fixed in place, when you are terminating into a box at an awkward angle, or when you have cut an existing rigid or IMC run and cannot re-thread the end.
6) I am standardizing conduit fittings across a building. Does one part number cover all my conduit sizes?
No, each trade size is its own part number in the HC series, so a multi-size building stocks several. A typical branch circuit and feeder mix runs HC 101 for 1/2 inch, HC 102 for 3/4 inch and HC 103 for 1 inch, with HC 106 for 2 inch feeders. All of them are the same steel set screw rigid/IMC design, so the install method and the look at the box stay consistent across the facility.
7) Can I mix these connectors with the couplings on the same conduit run?
Yes, and that is the normal way it gets built. The connector terminates conduit into a box or enclosure; a set screw coupling of the same style joins two lengths of conduit to each other. Both belong to the same set screw family for rigid and IMC, so a run can use HC connectors at the boxes and matching couplings at the splices. Just keep the trade size consistent with the pipe.
