1) What trade sizes does the Steel City HC compression connector come in?
Nine trade sizes, from 1/2 inch up through 3-1/2 inch: 1/2 (HC 401), 3/4 (HC 402), 1 inch (HC 403), 1-1/4 (HC 404), 1-1/2 (HC 405), 2 inch (HC 406), 2-1/2 (HC 407), 3 inch (HC 408) and 3-1/2 inch (HC 409). Order by the conduit trade size you are terminating, not by the outside diameter of the pipe.
2) Can I use a Steel City HC connector on EMT?
No. The HC compression connector is built for rigid and IMC conduit, which is threaded, heavier-wall pipe with a larger outside diameter than EMT of the same trade size. An EMT compression connector will not grip rigid, and this one will not close down on EMT. For EMT runs, buy a connector labeled for EMT in the matching trade size.
3) Do I need to thread the conduit to use this connector?
No threading required. This is a compression fitting, so it seats on the cut end of rigid or IMC pipe and clamps with a gland nut and compression ring. That makes it the fitting to reach for when you cut a run in the field and cannot get a threader on it, or when you are tying an existing threaded raceway into a box without unscrewing the whole run.
4) Compression connector or threaded coupling for rigid conduit - which should I use?
Use a threaded fitting where the pipe ends are already threaded and you can turn the pipe. Use the Steel City HC compression connector where you cannot: field cuts, tight tie-ins, or terminating into an enclosure on a run that is already fixed in place. The HC is a connector, meaning box or enclosure termination, not a pipe-to-pipe coupling.
5) I am standardizing conduit fittings across a building - can I stock one HC part number for everything?
No single number covers it. The HC is sized per trade size, so a building with mixed runs needs the matching part for each: HC 401 for 1/2 inch, HC 403 for 1 inch, HC 406 for 2 inch, and so on up to HC 409 at 3-1/2 inch. What you can standardize on is the family, since one connector type and material (steel, rigid/IMC compression) covers the full 1/2 to 3-1/2 inch range.
