It gives you a single 1/2 inch trade size opening in the middle of the flat cover, so you can bring a fixture stem, a pendant, a cord grip or a 1/2 inch connector through the closed-up box. There is exactly one knockout on the cover, so if you need two penetrations this is not the cover for the job.
