Four inches covers a typical kitchen basket strainer to P-trap drop. Measure from the bottom of the strainer body to the top of the trap inlet: if the gap is longer than 4 inches, you either need a longer tailpiece or a slip joint extension tube. Tailpieces are cut to length from the bottom end, so a little extra is workable, but 4 inches cannot be stretched.

Order the 799-1 as the tailpiece tube itself. The slip joint nut and washer that seal it to the trap, and the strainer body it threads into, are separate items. If you are replacing a leaking connection rather than the tube, add a 1-1/2 inch slip joint nut and washer to the order so you are not making a second trip.
