The keypad works standalone: enter a code on the illuminated ten-digit touchscreen and the bolt operates, no network required. The Z-Wave Plus radio only matters if you want phone or computer control, which requires a Z-Wave Plus hub. With a hub connected you can also track users, battery life, and lock history from the Z-Wave app. If you never pair it, it is still a code-and-key deadbolt.
2) Does the deadbolt still open with a key if the batteries die?
It is key operable, so a mechanical key cylinder gets you in regardless of battery state. Before that happens the lock gives a warning light and sound to flag low batteries. Power is four AA batteries, not included, and there is no hard wiring.
