Sylvania 64431 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Sylvania 64431 metal halide lamp work in my 1000W high bay fixture?
No. The 64431 is a 1500W lamp, and it has to run on a ballast rated for 1500W metal halide. A 1000W fixture's ballast will not drive it correctly, even though the E39 mogul socket is the same physical base used on both wattages. Match the fixture's ballast wattage and lamp type before you order, and keep in mind that mercury vapor and high pressure sodium ballasts are not substitutes for a metal halide ballast.
2) Can the M1500/BU-HOR be burned horizontally, or does it have to be base up?
The M1500/BU-HOR designation covers base-up through horizontal operating positions, which is what the BU-HOR suffix on the Sylvania 64431 refers to. If your fixture aims the lamp base down, you need a lamp rated for universal or base-down burning instead, because operating an HID lamp outside its rated position shortens life and shifts color.
3) How many lumens does a 1500W Metalarc BT56 metal halide lamp put out?
Output runs 153,000 to 170,000 lumens at 4000K. That is the range across initial and rated conditions for the Sylvania 64431, and it is why this wattage shows up in stadium, sports field, and tall warehouse bays where a single fixture has to cover a lot of floor from a long mounting height.
4) Is 4000K metal halide going to match the other lamps in my warehouse?
At 4000K the 64431 is a neutral white, cooler than a 3000K lamp and warmer than the 5000K to 6000K daylight lamps often used in shop lighting. If the rest of your bays are running 4000K metal halide, this will blend. Color rendering is 70 CRI, which is standard for general-purpose high wattage metal halide and fine for warehouse, manufacturing, and outdoor area work, but not for color matching or inspection tasks.
5) What is the exact part number to reorder this 1500W Sylvania mogul base metal halide lamp?
Order it as Sylvania 64431, ordering code M1500/BU-HOR, in the Metalarc Standard series. One model covers the lamp, so there are no finish or variant choices to specify. Give your electrical contractor the 64431 number and the BT56 bulb shape so the fixture socket and enclosure clearance get checked at the same time.
6) Does the Sylvania 64431 come with a ballast or igniter?
No, it is a lamp only. Metal halide at 1500W needs a matching magnetic ballast and igniter supplied by the fixture, so the 64431 is a replacement lamp for an existing high-wattage HID luminaire rather than a complete lighting assembly. The E39 mogul base screws into the fixture's existing socket.
