1) Can I use the Tell ED836 panic bar on a fire rated door?
No. The ED836 is a panic exit device and carries no fire rating, so it cannot go on a labeled fire door. Fire doors need fire exit hardware, which latches without dogging and is labeled for that opening. Use the ED836 on non-rated egress openings only.
2) Is the Tell ED836 a Grade 1 exit device, and what standard is that measured against?
Grade 1, tested to ANSI A156.3, 1994, and UL/ULC listed. Grade 1 is the heaviest of the three ANSI grades, which is what a school, hospital, or high traffic commercial entry usually gets specified for. That makes the ED836 a fit where a spec sheet calls for Grade 1 panic hardware on a non-rated opening.
3) Will the Tell ED836 latch into the strike that's already on my frame?
Probably not without swapping the strike. The ED836 ships with its own surface strike, and the stainless latch has a 5/8 inch throw, so the strike has to sit at the right depth for that throw to engage. The supplied strike has slotted holes, which lets you shift it to pick up the existing screw pattern or correct for a door that has settled. A rim device latches into a strike mounted on the face of the stop, not into an ANSI mortise strike pocket.
4) Should I use a rim exit device like the Tell ED836 or a vertical rod device?
A rim device like the ED836 latches into a single strike on the frame stop. That is the simplest and cheapest way to panic a single door in a frame, and it is the type to use when you have one leaf with a stop to latch into. On a pair of doors with no center mullion, a rim device has nothing to catch, so you either add a removable mullion and run rim devices on both leaves, or switch to vertical rod devices that latch at the head and sill. Concealed vertical rod is the same idea with the rods hidden inside the door, which means the door has to be prepped for it.
5) What cylinder comes with the Tell ED836 exit device, and what keyway is it?
It comes with a Schlage style (SCC) 6-pin solid brass cylinder in the C keyway, supplied keyed different. If you are standardizing a building on one key, hand the cylinder to your locksmith to rekey into your existing C keyway system, or pull it and drop in your own rim cylinder. Keyed different out of the box means two ED836 devices ordered together will not share a key.
6) Does the Tell ED836 need the door mortised, or is it surface mounted?
Surface mounted. The rail and strike go on the face of the door and frame with slotted holes for adjustment, so there is no rod channel or mortise pocket to cut. That is what makes a rim device the quickest retrofit on an existing opening: you are drilling for the cylinder and the mounting fasteners, not routing the door.
7) What is the backset on the Tell ED836 rim exit device?
2-3/4 inches, which is the standard commercial backset and the one most existing storefront and hollow metal doors are already bored for. If the door in front of you is prepped at 2-3/8 inches, the cylinder hole will not line up and the door needs to be re-prepped.
8) What is another 36 inch rim exit device besides the Tell ED836?
The Codelocks CL-ED Series 36 inch rim exit device covers the same 36 inch opening as a rim device. Like the ED836, it is not fire rated, so neither one belongs on a labeled fire door. The ED836 is the one to specify when the job calls for ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 panic hardware.
