1) Will the Tell ED848 exit device fit a 48 inch wide door?
Yes. The ED848 is the 48 inch rail size in Tell's ED800 Series rim panic hardware, so the push rail is sized for a 48 inch door leaf. If your leaf is narrower, order the shorter rail size in the same series rather than cutting this one.
2) Is the Tell ED848 a rim device or a vertical rod device, and what opening is it right for?
It's a rim device. The latch throws out from the rail into a strike on the frame stop, which makes it the right choice for a single door or for one leaf of a pair used with a removable mullion. If you need to latch a pair of doors with no mullion, a rim device won't do it, you want surface vertical rod hardware that latches at the head and the sill instead.
3) Will the Tell ED848 latch into my existing rim strike, and what backset does it use?
The latch is stainless steel with a 5/8 inch throw and the device works on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The strike is adjustable with slotted holes, so you have some room to pick up an existing frame prep rather than re-drilling. Compare the 5/8 inch throw against the stop depth on the strike you already have before you reuse it.
4) What cylinder comes with the Tell ED848, and what keyway is it?
It ships with a Schlage (SCC) standard cylinder, 6-pin solid brass, C keyway, keyed different. If you're standardizing a building on one key system, plan on keying it into your existing Schlage C system or swapping the cylinder, since it arrives KD out of the box rather than keyed alike.
5) Is the Tell ED848 or the Codelocks CL-ED fire rated for a labeled opening?
Neither one carries a fire rating. The Tell ED848 is listed as non-fire-rated panic exit hardware, and the Codelocks CL-ED Series rim exit device is likewise non-rated. For a labeled fire door assembly you need fire exit hardware, which is a different classification than panic hardware, so plan on a fire-rated device for those openings.
6) What rim exit device should I use if the door is 36 inches wide instead of 48?
The Tell ED848 rail is built for a 48 inch door, so it is not the right choice on a 36 inch opening. For that width, the Codelocks CL-ED Series rim exit device is offered in a 36 inch size. Both are rim-mounted panic devices, so the strike and latching arrangement on the frame is the same style of prep; the difference is the rail length matched to the door leaf.
7) How much door prep does the Tell ED848 panic bar need?
It's surface mounted, with slotted mounting holes for adjustment. That means no concealed pockets or rod channels in the leaf, which is why it's a common pick for retrofitting an opening that currently has no panic hardware. Mounting fasteners are supplied with the device.
