Thomas & Betts 1210-C – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will these Thomas & Betts straps work with IMC conduit or only EMT?
These are IMC pipe straps. The 12xx-C series is sized for intermediate metal conduit, so the strap diameter follows IMC outside dimensions rather than the thinner wall of EMT. Using an IMC strap on EMT of the same trade size leaves the conduit loose in the saddle.
2) What size fastener do I need for the Thomas & Betts 1210-C conduit strap?
The mounting hole is 1/4 inch, so it takes a 1/4 inch screw, bolt or anchor. Screws and anchors are not supplied with the strap, so order fasteners to suit the substrate (wood screws into framing, toggles or sleeve anchors into masonry or drywall).
3) What should I use to strap PVC conduit instead of the Thomas & Betts 1210-C steel pipe strap?
The Thomas & Betts 1210-C and its 1211-C, 1212-C and 1213-C sizes are zinc plated steel straps intended for IMC. For PVC runs, the Cantex 5133 series one-hole PVC conduit strap and the Kraloy PS20 two-hole PVC pipe strap are PVC straps instead of plated steel, so the strap material matches the raceway.
4) Can I use a Briscon SC strap in place of the Thomas & Betts 1211-C conduit strap?
No - they hold different things. The 1211-C is the 1/2 inch size of a zinc plated steel conduit strap for IMC. The Briscon SC series is an aluminum one-hole fold-over strap made for SE cable, so it is a cable strap rather than a rigid conduit strap and is not a substitute on an IMC run.
5) Are these steel conduit straps rust resistant enough for a damp or outdoor run?
The straps are zinc plated steel. Zinc plating handles indoor, dry and normally damp locations well, but in wet exterior, coastal or corrosive industrial exposure plated steel will eventually bloom. For those runs an aluminum or nonmetallic strap, such as the Briscon SC Series aluminum fold-over straps, is a better match for the environment.
6) Is a one-hole strap enough, or do I need a two-hole pipe strap?
A single-fastener strap like the 12xx-C is the standard choice for securing conduit flat to a surface at the code-required support intervals, and it installs with one fastener per point. Where you want the conduit clamped against rotation or pull-out, or you are supporting heavier pipe, a two-hole strap such as the Kraloy PS20 spreads the load across two fasteners. For PVC rather than metal conduit, use a matching nonmetallic strap like the Cantex 5133 Series.
7) Can I use these metal straps on PVC conduit?
Not the right part for it. The 12xx-C straps are zinc plated steel sized to IMC, and PVC conduit has different outside diameters and needs to be free to move with thermal expansion. For PVC, use a nonmetallic strap, for example the Cantex 5133 Series one-hole PVC conduit strap or the Kraloy PS20 two-hole PVC strap.
8) Which Thomas & Betts part number do I order for 3/4 inch conduit?
For 3/4 inch conduit the part number is 1212-C. The adjacent sizes are 1211-C for 1/2 inch and 1213-C for 1 inch, so if you are standardizing a building on one fastener size, all four share the same 1/4 inch mounting hole.
9) Is a one-hole or two-hole strap the better match for the Thomas & Betts 1212-C?
The Thomas & Betts 1212-C is the 3/4 inch size in the zinc plated steel pipe strap line. If the job calls for a single fastener per strap, the Cantex 5133 series is a one-hole conduit strap; if two fasteners are wanted for a more fixed hold, the Kraloy 078380 PS20 is a two-hole pipe strap. The difference is the number of mounting holes and therefore the number of anchors per support point.
