1) What thread size and length is the Metallics TRS810 threaded rod?
The TRS810 is 3/8-16 threaded rod cut to 10 foot lengths, steel with a zinc plated finish. 3/8-16 means a 3/8 inch diameter with 16 threads per inch, which is the standard coarse UNC pitch, so it takes standard 3/8-16 hex nuts, coupling nuts and hanger hardware.
2) Will 3/8-16 all-thread work with my existing beam clamps and strut hangers?
Yes, as long as that hardware is sized for 3/8 inch rod. 3/8-16 is the most common rod size in commercial electrical and mechanical hanging, and beam clamps, C-clamps, strut nuts, rod couplings and threaded rod hangers made for 3/8 inch all accept it directly. Anything prepped for 1/2-13 or 1/4-20 will not thread on.
3) Is zinc plated threaded rod okay for outdoor or wet locations?
The TRS810 is steel with zinc plating, which is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior use. For exterior, rooftop, parking garage, coastal or washdown areas, step up to hot dip galvanized or stainless all-thread instead. Zinc plate will eventually rust where it is exposed to weather or standing moisture.
4) Can I cut 10 foot threaded rod down to the drop lengths I need?
That is the normal way it gets used. Field crews cut the 10 foot stick to the drop length at each hanger point with a bandsaw, chop saw or rod cutter, then chase the cut end with a die or a nut so the threads start clean. Buying 10 foot lengths in a 25 piece bundle gives you the flexibility to hit varying ceiling heights without stocking multiple cut sizes.
5) What else do I need to order with threaded rod to complete a hanger assembly?
The bundle is bare rod only. You supply the connection at both ends: a beam clamp, concrete anchor or rod hanger at the structure, and 3/8-16 hex nuts with flat washers (or strut nuts and channel) at the load. Rod couplings are worth having on hand if any drop runs longer than a single stick.
6) Is this the right rod for trapeze hanging conduit and cable tray?
Yes, for typical electrical work. 3/8-16 zinc plated rod is the standard material for trapeze supports carrying EMT, rigid conduit, cable tray and junction boxes in interior commercial spaces. Heavier trapeze loads and long spans usually move up to 1/2 inch rod, so check what your support detail or engineer calls out before standardizing on 3/8.
