Topaz Lighting 384 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Topaz set-screw pull elbow outdoors or in a wet location?
No. The Topaz 90 degree EMT set-screw pull elbow is rated for dry locations only. For an exposed exterior run, a damp or wet location, or anywhere subject to washdown, you need a compression-type or gasketed fitting rated for that environment. Indoor commercial and industrial raceway is what this one is built for.
2) What trade sizes does the Topaz 90 degree EMT pull elbow come in, and which part number do I order?
Four trade sizes, each its own part number: 1/2 inch is 161, 3/4 inch is 382, 1 inch is 383, and 1-1/4 inch is 384. Order by the EMT trade size already in the run, not by the wire size.
3) Is a pull elbow the same as an LB conduit body, and when should I use one instead?
They do different jobs. A pull elbow turns a run 90 degrees and gives you a removable cover to reach in and pull conductors through the corner, but it is not a splice or junction point and conductors pass straight through. Use an LB, LL or LR conduit body when you need to enter a wall or change direction with a larger accessible opening. Where you just need a tight interior 90 in EMT with a hand-hole for the pull, the Topaz set-screw pull elbow is the simpler fitting.
4) Do I need any extra parts, or does the Topaz pull elbow come with its cover and screws?
It comes complete: the zinc die-cast body with its set screws for clamping the EMT, plus the removable cover for accessing the corner during the pull. Nothing separate to order for the fitting itself. You still supply the EMT, straps and any locknuts or connectors at the terminations.
5) How many Topaz 161-382 pull elbows come in a box?
They ship 100 to a pack. That's worth knowing before you order for a small tenant fit-out, since a handful of corners doesn't need a full box. For a facility standardizing EMT fittings across a building, a 100-count carton per trade size covers a lot of run.
6) Is zinc die-cast strong enough for an exposed warehouse conduit run?
The body is zinc die-cast, which is naturally corrosion resistant and is the standard material for interior EMT fittings in commercial and industrial work. For exposed interior runs in warehouses, light manufacturing and office ceilings it holds up fine. What limits it is moisture, not mechanical strength, since the fitting is dry-location rated.
