Topaz Lighting 711 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Topaz sealing locknut come in for conduit?
Nine trade sizes are offered on the Topaz steel sealing locknut: 1/2, 3/4, 1-1/4, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2 and 4 inch, plus the 713 size in the same run. Order by part number, not by description: 711 is the 1/2 inch, 712 the 3/4 inch, 714 the 1-1/4 inch, 716 the 2 inch, 717 the 2-1/2 inch, 718 the 3 inch, 719 the 3-1/2 inch and 720 the 4 inch. Match the locknut size to the trade size of the conduit or connector thread it is going on, not to the knockout diameter in the box.
2) What is the difference between a sealing locknut and a standard conduit locknut?
A standard locknut just clamps the connector or conduit hub to the box wall. A sealing locknut does that and adds a seal at the joint, so the connection resists moisture and debris getting in at the fitting point. Use the sealing type where the enclosure is outdoors, in a wash-down area, in a damp mechanical room, or anywhere you want the knockout closed up tight. On a dry interior branch circuit in a finished space, a plain steel locknut does the same clamping job.
3) Are Topaz sealing locknuts steel or zinc die cast?
Steel. The Topaz sealing locknut is made of steel throughout, which is what you want on larger trade sizes where the nut gets wrenched down hard against a knockout, and on runs where a die cast nut would be the weak point. Steel also keeps the fitting consistent with steel connectors and steel boxes on a commercial or industrial raceway system.
4) Can I use a sealing locknut on the inside of the box, or does it go on the outside?
The sealing side goes where the water is. A sealing locknut is meant to be drawn up against the outside face of the enclosure so the seal closes the gap between the nut and the box wall at the knockout. A plain locknut is what goes on the inside to bite the sheet metal and complete the mechanical hold. If you only run the sealing nut on the inside, you have clamped the fitting but you have not sealed the opening.
5) Do sealing locknuts work with rigid conduit and IMC, or only EMT connectors?
Any threaded hub of the matching trade size works. The nut threads onto the standard conduit thread, so it takes rigid, IMC, threaded hubs on equipment housings, and the threaded ends of EMT connectors alike. What has to match is the trade size, which is why the line runs 1/2 inch through 4 inch across parts 711 to 720.
6) Do I still need a bonding bushing or grounding locknut if I use a sealing locknut?
Yes, they do different jobs. The sealing locknut secures the fitting and closes the joint against moisture and debris; it is not a bonding fitting and does not replace a bonding bushing, bonding locknut, or ground wire where your installation calls for one. Spec the bonding hardware separately as the job requires and use the sealing locknut for the mechanical clamp and the seal.
7) Will a sealing locknut make an enclosure raintight by itself?
No. The seal at the locknut closes that one joint against moisture and debris; it does not make the whole enclosure or the conduit run wet-location rated. For a raintight assembly you still need connectors and an enclosure rated for the location, plus proper drainage on the run. The Topaz steel sealing locknut is the fitting that keeps water out of the knockout, not a substitute for the rest of the wet-location detail.
8) Is the 713 Topaz locknut the 1 inch size?
The 713 sits in sequence between the 712 (3/4 inch) and the 714 (1-1/4 inch) in the Topaz sealing locknut line. Order it by the part number 713 to land in that slot, and confirm the trade size against the connector thread you are joining before it goes on the wall.
9) Can I reuse a sealing locknut when I pull a fitting out during a renovation?
Treat it as a one-time seal. The nut itself is steel and will thread on again, but the sealing element gets compressed against the enclosure wall on the first install and will not close as tightly the second time. On renovation work where you are pulling and re-landing conduit, budget a fresh locknut in the matching trade size, which for these runs from 1/2 inch through 4 inch.
