Topaz Lighting TOP-282 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will this locknut work on EMT, or is it only for rigid conduit?
It is built for Rigid and IMC conduit connections into enclosures, boxes and panels. EMT is not a threaded raceway, so it terminates with a set screw or compression connector and the connector's own hub nut, not a rigid conduit locknut. If your run is EMT, order EMT connectors instead; if it is threaded rigid or IMC, this is the right nut.
2) Do I need one locknut or two per conduit entry into a box?
That depends on how the conduit lands. A threaded rigid or IMC nipple passing through a knockout is usually made up with a nut on each side of the enclosure wall, so budget two of these per entry. A conduit fitting with an integral hub that seats on the outside takes one nut on the inside. Topaz sells these 100 to a box, so count entries first, then double the number where you are using a nipple through a knockout.
3) Does a steel locknut alone give me a proper termination at the panel, or do I need a bushing too?
The locknut does the mechanical job, clamping the threaded rigid or IMC connection tight at the enclosure wall. It does not protect the conductors from the cut thread ends inside the box. On larger trade sizes you will normally add an insulating or grounding bushing on the inside of the enclosure to cover the conduit end. Order the bushing in the same trade size as the nut, 3/4 inch through 3 inch here.
4) How many locknuts come in a box from Topaz?
Each size ships 100 to a box. For a panel changeout or a large industrial raceway job that quantity covers a lot of terminations at once, and it means you are buying by the box rather than by the piece, so pick the trade size carefully before ordering.
5) Are these Topaz conduit locknuts steel or zinc die cast?
Steel. That matters on commercial and industrial work where the nut gets torqued hard against a panel wall and where a die cast nut can crack on a big trade size. Steel also bites into the enclosure metal at the tang, which is what keeps the raceway mechanically and electrically continuous at the box.
6) Will a 2 inch Topaz locknut thread onto IMC, or is IMC a different thread?
It will. Rigid and IMC share the same NPT-style conduit thread at a given trade size, which is why this nut is listed for both. A 2 inch nut (part 286) makes up on 2 inch rigid or 2 inch IMC without any adapter.
7) Can I use these on a renovation where I am reworking an existing panelboard?
Yes, that is a standard use. The same steel nut serves new construction feeders and retrofit work at an existing panelboard or enclosure, as long as the raceway is threaded rigid or IMC and the trade size falls between 3/4 inch and 3 inch. On older gear, check the existing thread condition before you order a full box.
