1) Is a steel locknut OK for a wet or outdoor location?
Steel is the material here, and the fitting is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. It is a mechanical fastener, not a seal, so it does not make a connection watertight on its own, and it is not a substitute for explosionproof fittings in a classified area. For a Class I or Class II space you need a fitting listed for that classification.
2) Does this locknut provide the ground bond, or do I need a bonding locknut?
This is a standard steel locknut, not a bonding locknut. It has no setscrew or bonding lug, so where the installation calls for a bonded connection at the enclosure, such as a service entrance or a circuit over 250 volts to ground landing in a concentric or eccentric knockout, you need a bonding-type locknut or bushing plus a bonding jumper instead. For an ordinary branch or feeder landing in a clean punched knockout, the standard steel locknut is what is used.
3) Why would I use a thin locknut instead of a standard one?
Thickness. A thin construction locknut takes up less room on the thread, which is what you want when the conduit stub through a panel wall is short, when you are stacking a locknut plus bushing plus a second locknut inside a crowded gutter, or when two fittings are competing for the same few threads. The trade-off is fewer threads engaged and a shallower wrench purchase, so on a long unsupported run a standard locknut is the better pick.
4) Do I still need a bushing if I use this locknut?
Yes, on rigid and IMC the locknut and the bushing do two different jobs. The locknut clamps the conduit to the enclosure wall; the bushing goes on the inside thread to protect conductor insulation from the cut thread edge. Order the bushing in the same trade size as the locknut, 1 inch through 4 inch here.
5) Can I mix Crouse-Hinds locknuts with another brand of conduit or fitting?
Yes. The thread on rigid and IMC is a standard NPT-style conduit thread by trade size, so a 2 inch Crouse-Hinds locknut (16X) threads onto 2 inch rigid or IMC from any manufacturer. Match the trade size and the conduit type and the brand of the pipe does not matter.
6) How many locknuts do I need per conduit entry into a panel?
Typical practice on threaded rigid or IMC is two per entry, one outside the enclosure wall and one inside, with the inside nut pulled up against the wall and a bushing over it. Where the conduit lands in a threaded hub or a knockout with only an internal nut plus bushing, one is enough. Count by entry, not by run, and order the trade size that matches the pipe.
7) I am standardizing conduit fittings across a facility. Can I stock one locknut for all my rigid runs?
Not one, but a short list. Sizing is per trade size, so a facility running 1 inch through 4 inch rigid or IMC stocks seven part numbers: 13X, 15X, 16X, 17X, 18X, 19X and 20X. All are steel and all are for ordinary, non-hazardous locations, so the only variable across the kit is the size on the pipe.
