1) Will a Crouse-Hinds locknut work on EMT, or is it only for rigid and IMC?
Rigid and IMC only. This locknut is threaded, and it mates with the tapered NPT male thread on rigid metal conduit and intermediate metal conduit. EMT is unthreaded and terminates with a set-screw or compression connector, so the locknut is not the right part for a bare EMT run. If your EMT connector has a male threaded hub, the locknut goes on that hub, not on the tubing itself.
2) Can I use these locknuts in a hazardous or classified area?
No. The Crouse-Hinds malleable iron locknut is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations. For a Class I or Class II classified area you need fittings listed for that classification, and the whole termination, sealing fitting included, has to be built from listed hazardous location components. Do not mix an ordinary location locknut into a classified enclosure entry.
3) How many locknuts do I need per conduit entry into a panel or box?
Standard practice on a threaded rigid or IMC entry is a locknut on each side of the enclosure wall, one outside and one inside, with a bushing on the inside to protect the conductors. That is two per entry, and it is what gives you the mechanical grip and the bonding path through the sheet metal. On a concentric or eccentric knockout, or where the run is over 250 volts to ground, you add bonding hardware such as a bonding locknut or bushing with a jumper. Count your entries and double the number when you order.
4) Does this locknut meet NEC requirements for a code inspected commercial job?
The locknut is built to NEC/CEC standards, which is the code basis inspectors work from on both sides of the border. That covers the fitting itself. What the inspector will also look at is the installation: locknut on both faces of the enclosure, a bushing where required to protect conductors, and bonding hardware where the entry is a concentric or eccentric knockout.
5) Does this locknut bite into the enclosure well enough to bond the conduit, or do I need a bonding locknut?
A standard locknut like this one seats against clean sheet metal and its serrations cut through paint to establish the connection on a straight punched knockout. Where the entry is a concentric or eccentric knockout, or where the circuit is over 250 volts to ground, the code calls for a bonding locknut or a bonding bushing with a jumper instead of relying on a plain locknut. Order the bonding style separately for those entries.
6) Do I still need a bushing if I use these locknuts?
Yes, in most cases. The locknut secures the conduit to the enclosure; it does nothing to protect conductors from the sharp end of the raceway. An insulated or insulated throat bushing goes on the inside end of the conduit for that. Plan on two locknuts and one bushing per rigid or IMC entry, all ordered separately from the locknut.
