1) Can I use a Crouse-Hinds chase nipple in a Class I Division 2 area or a paint booth?
No. This chase nipple is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. Anything in a classified area needs fittings listed for that class and division, typically an explosionproof union or sealing fitting, not an ordinary-location bushed nipple.
2) Chase nipple or a nipple with a locknut and bushing, which do I use to join two boxes back to back?
For two enclosures mounted tight against each other, the chase nipple is the right piece: it threads through the two aligned knockouts and pulls them together with a single locknut, with the bushed end facing the wire so conductors do not drag on a raw thread. If the boxes are apart, or you need a length of raw conduit between them, use a threaded close nipple or a chase nipple plus locknuts and a separate insulated bushing on each side. Where the conductors are 4 AWG or larger, code wants an insulated throat, and this one is non-insulated, so an insulated bushing or an insulated-throat fitting is what that job calls for.
3) Which way does the bushed end of the chase nipple face when I install it?
The bushed, tapered end goes toward the conductors, inside the enclosure the wire is pulled into, so the smooth shoulder takes the strain instead of a cut thread. The threaded shank passes through the knockout and the locknut lands on the far side. Installed backwards, the wire rides on the thread and the insulation is the thing that pays for it.
4) Does a chase nipple come with the locknut, or do I order that separately?
