The Crouse-Hinds bushed version adds a smooth bushed throat inside the nipple so conductors are not dragged across a sharp thread edge during the pull. 4) Will a chase nipple work with EMT?
No. This bushed chase nipple is threaded for Rigid and IMC, which share the same NPT thread series. EMT is unthreaded and needs a set screw or compression connector instead. If you are transitioning EMT into a box or another raceway, use an EMT connector, not a chase nipple.
5) Should I use a bushed chase nipple or an insulated throat bushing?
They do different jobs. A bushing threads onto the end of a conduit inside a box to protect conductors; a chase nipple connects two enclosures or lands in a knockout, and the bushed style already has the smooth throat built in, so you do not stack a separate bushing on it. This Crouse-Hinds nipple is the non-insulated type, meaning no plastic insert, which keeps a metal path through the fitting for bonding. Where the NEC calls for an insulated throat on larger conductors, an insulated-throat fitting is the one to specify.
6) Does a chase nipple maintain ground continuity between two boxes?
Yes. The non-insulated zinc die cast body carries metal-to-metal contact from the fitting through the enclosure wall, so the fitting itself is part of the bonding path when it is made up tight with a locknut. The fitting is built to NEC and CEC standards. On a run where the fitting alone is not permitted to serve as the equipment ground, you still pull a bonding jumper as the code requires.
7) Do I need to buy locknuts separately for a Crouse-Hinds chase nipple?
Plan on it. A chase nipple is the threaded nipple only. Landing it in a box knockout takes a locknut on the opposite side of the enclosure wall, sized to the same trade size as the nipple. Two-enclosure make-ups between hubs may not need one, but a knockout installation does.
