1) What size conduit do Crouse-Hinds SL sealing locknuts come in?
The Crouse-Hinds SL series sealing locknuts run the full trade size range from 1/2 inch up through 4 inch: SL1 (1/2"), SL2 (3/4"), SL3 (1"), SL4 (1-1/4"), SL5 (1-1/2"), SL6 (2"), SL7 (2-1/2"), SL8 (3"), SL9 (3-1/2") and SL10 (4"). Match the number to the trade size of the conduit or the hub thread you are locking down, not to the knockout you are passing through.
2) Will a sealing locknut work on EMT, or do I need threaded conduit?
Threaded conduit only. The SL sealing locknuts are made for rigid and IMC, which carry NPT threads that the locknut runs down onto. EMT is not threaded, so it takes a set-screw or compression connector instead, and the connector's own locknut is what secures it to the box. If your run is EMT you want an EMT connector, not this part.
3) Is a NEMA 3 locknut enough for an outdoor panel, or do I need a hazardous location fitting?
NEMA 3 covers falling dirt, rain, sleet and snow, so the SL sealing locknut suits an outdoor enclosure connection in an ordinary, non-hazardous location. It is not a hazardous location fitting. Classified areas (Class I, II or III) need conduit sealing fittings listed for that classification, which is a different product entirely from a sealing locknut.
4) What is the difference between a sealing locknut and a regular steel locknut?
A standard locknut is purely mechanical: it bites the enclosure wall and holds the conduit or hub tight. A sealing locknut does that and adds a gasketed seal at the box wall, which is what keeps rain and airborne dirt out of the enclosure at the knockout. That is why the SL series carries a NEMA 3 rating. On a dry interior pull box a plain locknut is fine; on anything exposed to weather, the sealing version is the one to specify.
5) Do Crouse-Hinds SL sealing locknuts meet NEC requirements for a commercial job?
The SL sealing locknuts are built to NEC/CEC standards, which is what an inspector on a commercial or municipal job is checking against, and they are rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations. For a facility standardizing its conduit hardware, the same SL series covers every trade size from 1/2 inch to 4 inch, so one part family covers the whole install.
6) How much room does a sealing locknut take up inside the box?
The SL sealing locknut is 0.2 inch deep, so it adds about a fifth of an inch of stack on the thread. That matters when you are landing a fitting in a shallow enclosure or need enough exposed thread past the box wall to still get the bushing on. Count the locknut plus your bushing against the thread length the conduit or hub actually gives you.
7) Can I use a steel sealing locknut to bond conduit to the enclosure?
Steel construction is what carries the mechanical grip and the electrical continuity through the connection, and that continuity is part of why the SL series is built to NEC/CEC. It is a steel locknut, not a bonding locknut with a set screw or lug, so where the code requires a bonding jumper or a bonding-type fitting at a concentric or eccentric knockout, that is a separate part.
8) I am replacing weathered locknuts on an outdoor conduit run, is this the same part?
If what you are pulling off is a gasketed steel locknut on threaded rigid or IMC, the SL series is the direct like-for-like. Read the trade size off the conduit, not the old nut, and order the matching model: 3/4 inch is SL2, 1 inch is SL3, 1-1/4 inch is SL4. Threading and NEMA 3 protection stay the same, so nothing else on the run has to change.
9) Does a sealing locknut go on the inside or the outside of the enclosure?
The seal has to be where the water is, so the sealing locknut lands on the outside face of the enclosure wall against the knockout, and the conventional locknut or bushing goes on the inside. Put it on the inside and you still have a mechanical connection but you lose the NEMA 3 weather seal the part exists to provide.
