TownSteel CRX-K-76-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the TownSteel CRX-K-76 fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The CRX-K-76 privacy knob lockset covers a door thickness range of 1-3/4 inches to 2 inches, so a 1-3/8 inch door is outside it. For a thinner door you'd need a different cylindrical privacy set, for example the Dexter C2000 privacy knob, which covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. Standard commercial doors at 1-3/4 inches are within the CRX-K range, and the 2 inch top end also covers thicker hospital and behavioral health doors.
2) Which backset do I order for the CRX-K-76, 2-3/4 inch or 5 inch?
Two backsets are offered: 2-3/4 inch, which is the standard on commercial cylindrical prep, and 5 inch for doors bored further from the edge, which is common on wide-stile or specially prepped openings. Measure from the door edge to the center of the 2-1/8 inch cross bore and match it. Both backsets are supplied in 630 satin stainless steel.
3) Will the CRX-K-76 drop into my existing frame strike prep?
It ships with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, which is the standard commercial hollow metal frame prep. If your frames are already cut for an ASA strike, the CRX-K goes in without frame work. The latch face plate is 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches with square corners, so a door edge previously prepped for a round-corner face plate will need the corners squared or a filler.
4) What makes a ligature-resistant knob different from a regular privacy knob, and where do I need one?
The CRX-K knob is shaped in stainless steel so a cord or sheet cannot be looped and held on it, and it uses tamper-resistant mounting screws so a patient cannot strip the lockset off the door. That matters in behavioral health, mental health and psychiatric units housing at-risk patients. On a normal office or restroom door a standard Grade 1 privacy knob is all you need; the ligature-resistant profile is only worth the spec where patient self-harm risk drives the hardware choice.
5) Is there another Grade 1 privacy knob lock that works as a direct swap for the TownSteel CRX-K-76?
Within the commercial knob locks carried alongside it, the CRX-K-76 is the Grade 1 privacy knobset, and it is built specifically with a ligature-resistant stainless steel knob and tamper-resistant mounting screws for behavioral and psychiatric healthcare openings. The other Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical knob locks available are different functions: the Sargent 8XG04 is a storeroom/closet function with a single cylinder, the BEST 8K Series 8K-AB is an entrance function single cylinder, and the Falcon X101 is a passage function with an interchangeable core. If the opening needs privacy plus the ligature-resistant knob profile, the CRX-K-76 is the one that carries both.
6) The doors in our building are 1-3/8 inch. What privacy knob should I use instead of the CRX-K-76?
The TownSteel CRX-K-76 is built for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, so a 1-3/8 inch leaf falls outside it. For that thickness, the Dexter C2000 privacy ball knob covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Cal-Royal BER20 privacy knob covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Deltana 6112 St. Thomas privacy knob covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. If the building has a mix of 1-3/8 inch and 2 inch doors, the Deltana range spans both.
7) Is the Baldwin 5000 Baltimore privacy knob a substitute for the TownSteel CRX-K-76?
They are not interchangeable. The Baldwin Estate 5000 Baltimore privacy knobset is a preconfigured residential-style set with a 2-3/8 inch backset and a full lip strike. The TownSteel CRX-K-76 is a commercial Grade 1 cylindrical lockset offered in 2-3/4 inch standard and 5 inch backsets with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, and its knob is ligature resistant for at-risk patient areas. The backset and strike prep alone mean they do not drop into the same door.
8) Would a Kwikset Polo knob work on a behavioral health patient room instead?
No. The Kwikset 400P-CP Polo keyed entry knob is a Grade 3 lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the 200P Polo is a passage knob supplied with a round corner latch and round corner strike. The TownSteel CRX-K-76 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lockset with a ligature-resistant stainless steel knob and tamper-resistant mounting screws, which is what makes it suitable for behavioral, mental, and psychiatric facilities housing patients at risk. The Polo knobs carry neither the grade nor the ligature-resistant knob profile.
9) Does the privacy function on the CRX-K-76 take a key?
No key and no cylinder. It's a non-keyed privacy function: locked from inside the room for a patient room, restroom or changing room. If you need the door keyed for staff control, a privacy set is the wrong function to order, look at a keyed entrance or storeroom cylindrical lock instead, such as the Sargent 8XG04 Grade 1 storeroom knob lock.
10) Can this lockset go on a hollow metal door as well as wood?
Both. The CRX-K mounts on wood or metal doors off the same lockset, so a facility running solid core wood patient room doors and hollow metal corridor doors can standardize on one part number. Door thickness has to fall between 1-3/4 and 2 inches either way.
11) Is this a Grade 1 lock, and how does it compare to the Grade 2 knob sets for a high traffic facility?
The CRX-K-76 is ANSI Grade 1, heavy duty, which is the top commercial cylindrical rating and the right call for patient rooms and other doors cycled constantly. Most of the knob locks in the category are Grade 2 or Grade 3, for example the Corbin Russwin CK4410 passage knob and the Dexter C2000 privacy knob are both Grade 2. If you want Grade 1 in a knob but do not need the ligature-resistant profile, the Falcon X101 and the BEST 8K Series are Grade 1 heavy duty knob locks.
12) Is the CRX-K a cylindrical lock or a mortise lock?
Cylindrical. It installs into a standard bored cylindrical prep rather than a mortise pocket, which means a faster retrofit on doors already carrying a bored knob or lever set and no routing of the door edge. TownSteel builds the ligature-resistant family in mortise as well, so if your doors are mortise prepped, ask for the mortise ligature-resistant series rather than the CRX-K.
13) We need the same ligature-resistant look on corridor and closet doors that should not lock. What do we use there?
The CRX-K-76 is a non-keyed privacy function, so it is not the right pick for a door that must stay free-swinging. For passage and closet openings at the same Grade 1 heavy duty level, the Corbin Russwin CK4310 is a Grade 1 passage/closet cylindrical knob lock covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset that is fire rated and takes an interchangeable core. Note that neither of those carries the ligature-resistant knob and tamper-resistant screws that the CRX-K-76 does.
14) What do I order if the same room needs a keyed lock rather than privacy?
The CRX-K-76 is non-keyed. For a keyed cylindrical knob lock at Grade 1, the Sargent 8XG04 is a storeroom/closet function single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office function with a conventional cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the BEST 8K-AB is a heavy duty entrance function single cylinder knob lock. Step down a grade and the Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder.
15) Our spec calls for a fire rated knob lock. Does the CRX-K-76 fit, or is there another option?
For openings where the drawing calls out a fire rated cylindrical knob lock, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset listed as fire rated, and the Falcon W101 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, also fire rated. Those are both passage function. The TownSteel CRX-K-76 is the Grade 1 privacy function with the ligature-resistant stainless knob and tamper-resistant screws, mountable on wood or metal doors, so on a fire rated patient-room opening confirm the labeled door assembly requirement with the AHJ before finalizing.
16) We use interchangeable cores across the facility. Does that rule out the CRX-K-76?
The CRX-K-76 is a non-keyed privacy function, so there is no core in it to key into a system at all. If a given opening in the same corridor does need to sit on an interchangeable core, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical knobset supplied for an interchangeable core. Privacy rooms can run the CRX-K-76 while the keyed openings around them run the IC product.
17) What finish does the ligature-resistant CRX-K knob come in?
630 satin stainless steel only, on both the 2-3/4 inch and 5 inch backset builds. That is the standard institutional finish, so it lines up with the stainless push plates, hinges and frames typically already in a healthcare corridor. If you need brass or bronze to match residential trim, this is not the set for it.
18) Can I put a dummy knob on the inactive leaf and match the CRX-K-76?
Dummy trim is a separate item from the CRX-K-76, which is a functioning privacy lockset. For inactive leaves the Schlage A170 is a Grade 2 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical knob trim for 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, and the BEST 6K Series 6K-1DT is a Grade 2 medium duty single dummy trim. Neither is ligature resistant, so on a patient-risk opening it is worth confirming the dummy leaf is acceptable under the same facility standard as the locked leaf.
