TownSteel CRX-K-75-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the TownSteel CRX-K-75 passage lockset fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The CRX-K-75 is built for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors only, which covers standard commercial thickness and heavier psychiatric-grade doors. On a 1-3/8 inch door you need a different lock. Among Grade 1 passage cylindrical knob locks, the Falcon X101 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches and the Corbin Russwin CK4310 covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches, though neither is a ligature-resistant knob.
2) Does the CRX-K-75 lock the door, or does it just latch?
It only latches. The CRX-K-75 is passage function and non-keyed, so both knobs are always free and there is no cylinder and no privacy button. Use it on corridor, closet and day room doors in a behavioral health unit where staff need free movement. If the opening has to secure, you need a keyed or privacy function in the CRX-K line instead.
3) Will this TownSteel ligature-resistant knob lock work in my existing ASA strike prep?
Yes, if the frame is prepped ASA. The CRX-K-75 ships with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, which is the common commercial hollow metal frame prep. The latch faceplate is 1-1/8 inch by 2-1/4 inch with square corners, so a door edge routed for a square-corner faceplate of that size takes it directly.
4) What makes the CRX-K knob ligature resistant, and where is it meant to be used?
The knob is a sloped stainless steel form with no projecting lever arm or gap that a cord, sheet or strap can be anchored to, and the mounting screws are tamper resistant. TownSteel builds it for behavioral, mental and psychiatric healthcare facilities housing at-risk patients. A standard lever or ball knob in those rooms gives an anchor point; this does not.
5) What is the closest Grade 1 passage knob lock to the TownSteel CRX-K-75 from another brand?
The Falcon X101 is the nearest straight equivalent: a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical passage knobset, fire rated, with a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Corbin Russwin CK4310 is also Grade 1 passage/closet with a Global knob and a 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door range. The difference that matters is the knob itself - the CRX-K-75 uses a ligature-resistant stainless steel knob with tamper-resistant mounting screws for behavioral and psychiatric healthcare openings, which neither the X101 nor the CK4310 provides. If the ligature-resistant profile is the reason for the specification, those two are not substitutes.
6) My door is 1-3/8 inch thick - what passage knob should I use instead of the CRX-K-75?
The CRX-K-75 is built for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, so a thinner leaf needs a different lock. The Corbin Russwin CK4310 is Grade 1 passage/closet and covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon X101 Grade 1 passage knobset covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. At Grade 2, the Corbin Russwin CK4410 and the Dexter C2000 passage knob both list 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch.
7) I need a keyed lock on a patient room door, not a passage function - what else is there?
The CRX-K-75 is non-keyed passage, so it latches without locking. For keyed heavy duty Grade 1 knob locks, the Sargent 8XG04 is a storeroom/closet single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the BEST 8K entrance function is Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office cylindrical lock with a conventional cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. None of those three carry the ligature-resistant knob the CRX-K-75 uses, so for at-risk patient housing confirm the keyed function is available within the ligature-resistant series before substituting.
8) Can a ligature-resistant knob lockset go on a wood door, or is it hollow metal only?
Both. The CRX-K mounts on wood or metal doors, so you can standardize the same lock across patient room wood doors and hollow metal corridor doors in the same facility. It uses tamper-resistant mounting screws so the trim cannot be pulled off with a common driver.
9) Is the TownSteel CRX-K-75 Grade 1, and how does it compare to a Grade 2 passage knob for a high-traffic facility?
It is ANSI Grade 1 heavy duty, the top cylindrical grade for cycle life and strength, which is what you want on behavioral health corridors that get hit all day. Grade 2 passage knobs like the Corbin Russwin CK4410 or the Dexter C2000 passage are built to a lower cycle and strength standard and carry no ligature-resistant knob form.
10) I need a heavy duty Grade 1 passage knob but not a ligature-resistant one. What else is there?
For a standard commercial passage opening, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage knobset that takes an interchangeable core and fits 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CK4310 is a Grade 1 non-keyed passage knob for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. Keep the CRX-K-75 for rooms where an anti-ligature knob is required.
11) If the room needs privacy rather than free passage, what takes the place of the CRX-K-75?
The CRX-K-75 is passage only, with no locking function. Privacy knob locks in the same cylindrical family include the Dexter C2000 privacy ball knob at Grade 2, the Cal-Royal BER20 privacy knob at Grade 3, and the Pamex FTF Baron privacy knob at Grade 3. Note that a standard privacy knob with an exposed turn button is generally not appropriate on at-risk patient rooms, which is the application the ligature-resistant CRX-K-75 is built for.
12) What finish does the TownSteel CRX-K-75 come in?
630 satin stainless steel, the standard institutional finish, and it is the only finish offered in both the 2-3/4 inch and 5 inch backsets. That matches typical stainless push plates, hinges and frames on a healthcare unit, so it drops into an existing 630 hardware set without looking odd.
13) Which Grade 1 knob locks besides the CRX-K-75 offer a 2-3/4 inch backset for standard commercial prep?
The CRX-K-75 lists 2-3/4 inch as its standard backset with a 5 inch option for wider stiles. Among Grade 1 heavy duty peers, the Sargent 8XG04 storeroom/closet knob lock is specified with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with interchangeable core, which is the closer match if the function needs to stay passage.
