TownSteel CRX-A-75-630-LH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the TownSteel CRX-A-75 fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes, and that is the only thickness it is built for. The CRX-A-75 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is standard commercial thickness. It mounts on either wood or metal doors using through-bolts with tamper-resistant screws. If you are working a 1-3/8 inch older interior door, this is the wrong lock; a Cal-Royal Barrington series cylindrical such as the BA00 covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, or the Falcon K501 covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches.
2) Does the CRX-A-75 passage lockset lock at all?
No. Passage function means the levers always retract the latch from both sides, with no cylinder and no locking. It is catalogued as non-keyed. Use it on corridor, closet, and patient-room doors that need latching and controlled opening force but never need to be secured. If you need the same ligature resistant arch trim with a key, order a keyed CRX-A function instead, or for a keyed cylindrical from another brand the Falcon K501 is a Grade 1 entrance function with push-turnbutton.
3) Is handing required when ordering the CRX-A-75, and which hands are offered?
Yes, handing has to be specified. Four choices are built: LH, RH, LHR, and RHR. Determine hand from the outside of the door: hinges on your left with the door swinging away from you is LH, swinging toward you is LHR, and the mirror for right hand. Get it wrong on a ligature resistant arch trim and the trim orientation will be backwards on the opening.
4) What backset do I need for the CRX-A-75, and does it cover a wide stile metal door?
Two backsets are built: 2-3/4 inch standard, and a 5 inch for wider stiles or where the existing bore sits farther from the edge. Standard commercial prep is 2-3/4 inch; the 5 inch option is what you order when the door prep or a wide stile pushes the cross-bore back. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore before you pick.
5) Will the CRX-A-75 drop into my existing ASA strike prep?
It ships with a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, which is the standard commercial frame prep, so in most cases it lands in the existing cutout without frame work. Latch face plate is 1-1/8 inch. If your frame is prepped for a T-strike or a full lip box strike of a different size, plan on new frame prep or a strike filler.
6) Is this lockset suitable for behavioral health or psychiatric patient rooms?
That is what the CRX-A is built for. It carries a 5-point ligature resistant stainless steel arch trim and TownSteel states it meets all ligature resistant requirements, with the series recommended for high-risk areas in facilities housing patients at risk. Tamper-resistant mounting screws keep the trim from being taken off with a common driver.
7) What is a comparable Grade 1 cylindrical lock to the TownSteel CRX-A-75 if the door does not need ligature resistant trim?
The Falcon K501 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock in the K Series, carrying an entrance function with push-turnbutton locking and a fire rating. The CRX-A-75 is also Grade 1 heavy duty but is a non-keyed passage function with a 5-point ligature resistant stainless steel arch trim and tamper-resistant through-bolt mounting, intended for high-risk areas in facilities housing patients at risk. On a standard corridor or office door where nobody needs the anti-ligature trim and the opening needs to lock, the K501 is the closer match; where the arch trim is the point of the specification, the CRX-A-75 is.
8) Can I use the Cal-Royal BA Series instead of the TownSteel CRX-A-75 on a behavioral health door?
Not as a like-for-like. The Cal-Royal Barrington BA Series covers keyed and locking functions - BA00 entrance, BA03 classroom on the ANSI F84 function, BA04 communicating on ANSI F80, and BA05 storeroom with a Grade 2 ANSI F86 deadlocking latch - and the BA03, BA04 and BA05 are Grade 2. The CRX-A-75 is Grade 1 with a 5-point ligature resistant stainless steel arch trim and tamper-resistant mounting screws, which is the reason it is specified for high-risk areas housing patients at risk. A BA Series lever will not satisfy an anti-ligature requirement, so use the BA Series for standard commercial openings and keep the CRX-A-75 where the ligature spec applies.
9) The opening needs to lock, not just latch - what replaces the TownSteel CRX-A-75?
The CRX-A-75 is a non-keyed passage lockset, so it latches and releases from both sides with no locking at all. If the door has to secure, the Falcon K501 is a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance function with push-turnbutton locking, and on the Cal-Royal Barrington side the BA00 is an entrance function, the BA05 a storeroom function with a Grade 2 ANSI F86 deadlocking latch, and the BA03 a classroom function on ANSI F84. Choose by how the room is controlled: turnbutton from inside for entrance, key-only outside with always-free egress for storeroom, key-locked outside lever for classroom.
10) Is the CRX-A-75 heavy duty enough for a hospital corridor door that cycles all day?
It is an ANSI Grade 1 cylindrical lock, heavy duty, rated commercial. Grade 1 is the top ANSI/BHMA durability tier and the normal specification for institutional and high-traffic openings, so it suits corridors, day rooms, and patient areas in healthcare and correctional work.
11) I need to standardize a whole ligature resistant wing, some doors locking and some not. Can I keep the same trim look?
Yes. The CRX-A is a series, not a single lock, and TownSteel offers various cylinder and keying options across it. Spec the -75 passage function on the doors that only need latching and a keyed CRX-A function on the doors that need security, and every opening keeps the same 5-point ligature resistant arch trim and tamper-resistant through-bolt mounting.
12) What is the difference between a cylindrical lockset like the CRX-A-75 and a mortise lock for this kind of door?
The CRX-A-75 is cylindrical, meaning it installs into a standard 2-1/8 inch cross-bore and edge bore rather than a pocket routed into the door edge. That makes it far quicker on retrofit and on wood doors, and it is why this one mounts on both wood and metal. A mortise lock needs the door edge machined for a lock body and is what you go to when you want heavier trim, multiple functions in one case, or a deadbolt in the same body.
13) Does the CRX-A-75 come with a strike, or do I order that separately?
The ASA strike is part of the spec at 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, along with the 1-1/8 inch latch face plate. What you do have to decide at order time is backset (2-3/4 or 5 inch) and hand (LH, RH, LHR, RHR). There is no cylinder to specify since this is the non-keyed passage function.
14) Is the BEST 9KW an alternative to the TownSteel CRX-A-75?
They solve different problems. The BEST 9KW Series is a heavy duty electromechanical cylindrical lock operated by remote control, so it needs power and an access control tie-in. The CRX-A-75 is a purely mechanical, non-keyed Grade 1 passage lockset with ligature resistant arch trim. If the requirement is remote release of the opening, the 9KW is the direction; if the requirement is an anti-ligature latch-only lever on a patient door, the CRX-A-75 is.
15) I need a 5 inch backset lock - does the Falcon K501 or the CRX-A-75 cover it?
The TownSteel CRX-A-75 is ordered in 2-3/4 inch standard or 5 inch backset, in left hand, left hand reverse, right hand and right hand reverse, with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch ASA strike and a 1-1/8 inch faceplate. For a wide-stile or deep-trim opening needing the 5 inch backset, the CRX-A-75 is the one to order that way; the Falcon K501 is catalogued here as a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance lock in the K Series without that backset option, so specify the CRX-A-75 when the 5 inch dimension drives the job.
