Trimco 1592LLE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Why would I need lead lined escutcheons on a hospital latch?
They go on doors in X-ray and imaging rooms. A lead lined door loses its radiation shielding wherever hardware is cut through it, so the lead lined plates close the gap at the latch prep on both faces. That is why they are sold in pairs rather than singly, and why the matching 1592LLT lead lined latch tube exists for the hole itself.
2) Will the 1592LLE work with the push/pull latch already on my exam room door if it is not a Trimco?
Plan on Trimco. The plates are cut for the 1500 Series push/pull latch prep, and the standard prep referenced is a 5 inch backset with a 2-3/4 inch T-strike. Another manufacturer's paddle latch will not line up unless it uses that same prep. Trimco publishes a 1592LLE template drawing, and that is what to check the existing door against before ordering.
3) Is the Trimco 1592LLE a complete privacy latch, or do I still need a latchset?
The 1592LLE is a set of two lead lined escutcheon plates that go behind the trim of a Trimco 1500 Series push/pull hospital latch - it is the radiation shielding component, not a working latch. If what you actually need is a complete privacy bed/bath latch for the door, the Pemko PDLAA is a privacy door latch sold as a functioning unit. Order the 1592LLE only when you are shielding an opening that already has, or is getting, a 1500 Series latchset.
4) For a bed/bath privacy opening that does not need lead lining, what should I use instead of the Trimco 1592LLE?
If there is no imaging or radiation shielding requirement, the lead lined escutcheon plates are unnecessary. The Pemko PDLAA is a privacy door latch carrying a privacy/bed/bath function with UL fire door classification and ADA compliance, which covers a standard patient restroom or staff washroom opening on its own. Reserve the 1592LLE for x-ray, imaging, and similar shielded rooms where the door assembly has to block radiation at the trim penetrations.
5) Do I have to specify handing on Trimco 1500 Series hospital latch hardware?
No. The 1500 Series base assembly is field reversible, so hand and function can be changed on site. That is deliberate on Trimco's part, it lets a distributor or a facility stock one item instead of separate left and right hand versions.
6) Which Trimco latchsets do these lead lined plates go with?
The 1500 Series push/pull latchsets: the 1562A, 1562L privacy, 1562HL passage, 1562AE exit/entrance, the 1562 mortise version, 1563A, 1580A, 1581A, and the 1591A push and 1591B pull latchsets. The 1592LLE is the lead lined escutcheon option within that same family.
7) Is a push/pull paddle latch ADA compliant for a patient room door?
Trimco's 1500 Series push/pull latches meet ADA requirements, which is the point of a paddle over a knob, no tight grasping or twisting to operate. They are also UL Listed and approved for use by the Veteran's Administration, which matters on VA and federal healthcare work.
8) Is there a simpler privacy latch option if I do not need lead lining?
If radiation shielding is not part of the job, the Pemko PDLAA privacy door latch covers the privacy/bed/bath function and carries UL fire door classification and ADA compliance. Within Trimco's own line the 1562L is the privacy push/pull latchset. The 1592LLE only earns its place where the door is lead lined.
9) Does the privacy function on the 1592LLE latchset lock by pushing the levers down?
Yes. The standard privacy push/pull arrangement locks with both levers down. Options exist for other paddle up and down combinations, plus multiple functions, tubular or mortise locks, engraving, and Torx security screws, so spell out the combination you want when you order.
10) Does the Trimco 1592LLE shield the latch bore as well, or is there a separate part for that?
The 1592LLE covers the escutcheon area only, two plates per set. Trimco makes a companion piece, the 1592LLT lead lined latch tube for 1500 Series push/pull latchsets, for the latch bore itself. Shielded openings typically take both so the trim face and the through-bore are addressed. Neither is a substitute for the other, and neither replaces a complete latch such as the Pemko PDLAA privacy door latch.
11) Both the Trimco 1592LLE and the Pemko PDLAA come up for healthcare doors - what is the difference in what they do?
They sit at different points in the opening. The Pemko PDLAA is a privacy door latch with a privacy/bed/bath function, UL fire door classification, and ADA compliance - it is the latching device. The Trimco 1592LLE is a pair of lead lined escutcheon plates used with the 1500 Series push/pull hospital latches, which are reversible for hand and function and meet ADA requirements. A hospital corridor or patient room using push/pull paddle trim takes the Trimco assembly; a conventional privacy opening takes the Pemko latch.
12) How far do Trimco 1500 Series push/pull latches stick out from the door?
Less than half the projection of other push/pull latches, per Trimco. On a narrow corridor or a door swinging into tight clearance that is the difference between a paddle you catch a gurney on and one you do not.
13) Will the paddles hold up in a hospital corridor?
Lever pads and latch covers are made from bronze, brass or antimicrobial copper and are rated for heavy duty use, and Trimco builds the pads thicker and heavier than competing units specifically so handles do not break under abuse. A nylon insert in the latchbolt face quiets the latch and cuts friction, which matters on patient room doors at night.
