1) Is a kick plate or an armor plate right for my door?
Height decides it. Trimco's K Series splits the same plate into three ranges: mop plates at 6 inches high or less for the very bottom of the door, kick plates from 7 to 16 inches high (which is what the K0125 is), and armor plates from 17 to 48 inches high for doors that take cart and gurney traffic well above the bottom rail. If you are protecting against feet and hand trucks, the kick plate range is correct. If a hospital bed or a stock cart is hitting the door at waist level, go to the KA armor plate series in the same .038, .050 or .064 gauges.
2) What finish options does the Trimco K0125 kick plate come in to match my existing door hardware?
Seven standard finishes plus special order: 605 polished brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 satin aluminum clear anodized, 629 polished stainless steel, and 630 satin stainless steel. For a building already standardized on 630 lever trim and push plates, the satin stainless plate is the match. The finish follows the base material, so a 613 oil rubbed bronze plate is a bronze plate, not a plated stainless one.
3) Does the Trimco K0125 kick plate meet ADA requirements?
ADA compliant, and it is a commercial grade plate. The practical point on an accessible opening is the bevel: the K Series is pencil beveled on all four edges as standard so there is no raw sharp edge at the bottom of the door, and heavy bevel is available as the HB option where the spec calls for it.
4) Can I get a Trimco kick plate cut around a lock, a louver or a rosette?
Yes. The K Series takes custom cutouts as an ordered option, including louver cutouts, mortise cutouts and rosette cutouts, plus round corners (RC) and countersinking (C). Custom sizes and shapes are also available. If the plate has to run past a mortise lock body or an existing louver in the bottom of the door, specify the cutout with the order rather than field cutting a .125 inch plate.
5) Can a kick plate be installed without drilling into the door?
Adhesive tape mounting is offered as an option on the K Series, which is how you protect a hollow metal or a fire rated leaf without putting fasteners through it, and it is the usual route for a property manager who does not want screw holes in a leased suite door. Screw mounting is the standard method otherwise. Note that at .125 inch, the K0125 is a heavy plate, so a taped install wants a clean, fully degreased door face.
6) Are Trimco K Series protection plates made in the USA, and what are they made of?
Manufactured in the United States, from stainless steel, brass, bronze or aluminum depending on the finish you order. Stainless is the substrate on the K0125 as catalogued. For federal, state or institutional jobs carrying a domestic sourcing requirement on the hardware package, the US manufacture is the answer to that line item.
7) What is a stretcher plate and do I need one instead of a kick plate?
A stretcher plate is the version built for openings that take repeated hard hits from rolling equipment: Trimco's KS038 and KS050 come countersunk with heavy bevel on all four edges and oval head screws as standard, so nothing protrudes to catch a passing cart or stretcher. A standard kick plate like the K0125 is pencil beveled with normal fastening. If the door is on a hospital or service corridor where the plate itself gets struck edge on, the stretcher plate is the right call; for general office, retail and school corridor doors the kick plate is what gets specified.
8) Is there a non metallic kick plate option if I do not want stainless on the door?
Trimco offers the K6000 plastic kick plate at 1/8 inch in heights from 4 to 48 inches, which spans the mop, kick and armor plate ranges in a single product. It is the option where a metal plate would clash with a wood door or where you want to avoid the maintenance of a polished metal face. The K0125 is the metal equivalent at the same 1/8 inch thickness in the 7 to 16 inch kick plate range.
