Trimco K0050-630-7x48 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Trimco K0050 kick plate fit a 36 inch wide door?
Yes. The K0050 comes in widths up to 48 inches, and standard practice on a 36 inch door is a plate 2 inches narrower than the door so it clears the stop on both sides. The 10"x34" and 12"x34" sizes are the usual picks for a 36 inch leaf. If the door is a single-swing slab with no stop interference on the hinge side, some spec writers go full 36 inch width, but 34 inch is the safer order.
2) What is the difference between a Trimco K0050 kick plate and a KA050 armor plate?
Height is the whole difference in the Trimco K series. K0050 is a kick plate at .050 inch thick, 7 to 16 inches high, and it protects the bottom of the door where carts and shoes hit. KA050 is the same .050 inch material but 17 to 48 inches high, so it armors the lower half of the leaf where hospital beds, pallet jacks or dollies strike. Below 6 inches high the same material becomes the KM050 mop plate, used to keep mop buckets and floor scrubbers off the bottom rail.
3) Does a Trimco K0050 kick plate come with mounting screws, or do I order them separately?
Screws are an option you pick when ordering the K0050: TEK screws or TORX screws. TEK screws are self-drilling and are what you want on a hollow metal door where you are not pre-tapping. TORX gives you a tamper-resistant head for corridors where the plates get picked at. The plate ships pencil beveled on all four edges as standard, so no edge prep is needed on your end.
4) Is a Trimco kick plate ADA compliant?
Yes, the K0050 is ADA compliant. That matters on the push side of an accessible door, where protruding hardware and edges at the bottom of the leaf are restricted. The pencil bevel on all four edges is part of why it sits flat against the face without a lip to catch.
5) How tall a kick plate do I need for a door that gets hit by carts?
An 8 inch high plate is the standard commercial kick plate and covers shoe and foot traffic. Go to 10 or 12 inches where carts, luggage and dollies hit higher; the K0050 runs 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 inches. Once you need more than 16 inches of coverage you are into the KA050 armor plate, which is the same .050 inch material in 17 to 48 inch heights.
6) Is .050 inch thick heavy enough for a kick plate in a school or hospital corridor?
.050 inch is Trimco's heavy duty standard gauge and it holds up in office, K-12, hospitality, retail and commercial or industrial openings. For traffic that takes real impact rather than scuffing, the same K series is made in .064 inch as the K0064 and in .125 inch as the K0125. If the concern is scuffing and cart rub rather than denting, .050 inch is what most commercial specs call out.
7) Can I get a Trimco kick plate that sticks on instead of being screwed to the door?
Yes, Trimco offers adhesive tape mounting as an option on the K series protection plates. That is the route for a door you do not want to drill, an aluminum storefront leaf, or a rental where you have to put the opening back. For anything taking cart traffic, mechanical fasteners hold better than tape.
8) What finish should I order to match satin chrome or brushed nickel door hardware?
630 satin stainless steel is the match for satin chrome and brushed lever sets, and it is the most commonly specified commercial finish. The K0050 is also made in 629 bright stainless, 628 clear anodize for aluminum storefront, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, and 710CU Steralloy silver. Nine finishes total, so a property manager standardizing across a building can hold one number across every opening.
9) Can I get a kick plate with a cutout for the lock or a louver?
Custom cutouts are a standard option on Trimco K series plates: louver cut, mortise cut and rosette cut. That covers a plate running up past a mortise lock, one that has to clear a door louver, or a taller plate that meets a knob or lever rose. Countersinking and heavy bevel are also available if the plate has to sit flush under a closer arm or take oval head screws.
10) What material are Trimco K0050 kick plates made from, and are they made in the USA?
Stainless steel is the substrate for the K0050. The wider K series is manufactured in the U.S.A. and offered in brass, bronze and aluminum as well, with material designators BR for brass, BZ for bronze, AI for aluminum and SS for stainless. For exterior openings or washdown areas, stainless is the one that will not pit the way a plated finish does.
11) Do I need a rounded corner kick plate for a door with a closer or narrow trim?
Round corner is an available option on the K series. RC is worth ordering where a square corner would catch a mop, sit next to a narrow astragal, or where the plate is in a hand-contact area. Square corners are standard otherwise.
