Trimco K0050 10X33 630 HB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How thick is the stainless on the Trimco K0050 plates, and is .050 heavy enough for a school corridor?
The K0050 designation is the .050 inch gauge, which is Trimco's heavy duty standard stainless thickness and the usual choice for K-12 schools, office corridors and retail. If the opening takes cart or equipment impact, the family also runs .064 (K0064) and .125 (K0125) in kick plate heights, and .038 (K0038) for lighter duty.
2) I just need a short kick plate at the bottom of the door, not full armor coverage. What should I use instead?
For bottom-of-door only, a short plate is the right call. Delaney offers a 6 inch by 34 inch kick plate and an 8 inch by 34 inch anodized kick plate, both supplied with screws. Within Trimco's K program the same role is filled by the K0038, K0050 and K0125 kick plates at 7 to 16 inches high, and by the KM mop plates at 6 inches high or less. The KA038 armor plate starts at 17 inches high, so it is aimed at taller coverage than a scuff band.
3) Will a 630 satin stainless kick plate match the other door hardware in my building?
630 is satin stainless steel, the BHMA finish number used on the large majority of commercial lever locks, exit devices and hinges, so it ties in with standard commercial trim. Trimco also builds these plates in 605 polished brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 satin clear anodized aluminum and 629 polished stainless if your openings are finished differently.
4) Can I get a Trimco protection plate cut around a mortise lock or a louver?
Yes. Cutouts are a listed factory option: louvre cut, mortise cut and rosette cut, plus custom cutouts, sizes and shapes. Other options are HB heavy bevel, C countersinking, RC round corners, and adhesive tape mounting instead of screws. Call out the cutout and its location against the door on the order so the plate arrives ready to hang.
5) Do Trimco kick plates come with mounting screws, or do I need to order fasteners?
Screws are only called out as standard on the KS stretcher plates, which ship countersunk with heavy bevel on four edges and oval head screws. On the standard K Series kick and armor plates, plan on supplying fasteners, or specify the adhesive tape mounted option if you would rather not drill the door. Tape mounting is worth considering on fire doors and on hollow metal you do not want to pierce.
6) Is a stainless kick plate ADA compliant on an accessible door?
The Trimco K Series plates are flagged ADA compliant, and they are built for commercial openings. In practice a protection plate helps rather than hurts on an accessible door, since the smooth plate covers the bottom of the push side where an ADA opening needs a flush, uninterrupted kick area.
7) What is a cheaper alternative to a Trimco stainless kick plate for a light traffic door?
For an apartment or light commercial door where you just want scuff protection, Delaney offers stock kick plates including a 6 x 34 inch plate with screws and an 8 x 34 inch anodized plate with screws. Both ship with fasteners included. They come in fixed stock sizes only, so if you need a specific width, a cutout around a mortise lock, or a matched BHMA finish across a run of openings, the Trimco K Series is the one that can be specified to the opening.
8) Can a Delaney 6 inch x 34 inch kick plate substitute for a Trimco armor plate on a school corridor door?
Only if the spec is for a kick plate. The Delaney 49634x is a 6 inch by 34 inch kick plate, which sits at the bottom of the door. Trimco's KA038 is a satin stainless steel armor plate in the 17 to 48 inch height range, pencil beveled on all four edges, and the K protection plate program is written for K-12 schools and similar commercial traffic. Where a submittal names an armor plate, the 6 inch Delaney plate does not cover the same area of the door face.
9) We need the plate finish to match stainless hardware and to take custom cutouts. Which option handles that?
The Trimco KA038 in 630 satin stainless steel is the one to specify when the plate has to match stainless steel trim and be cut to the opening. It is a stainless steel substrate, and the K protection plate program offers countersinking, heavy bevel, round corners, and louvre, mortise and rosette cutouts, plus custom sizes and shapes. The Delaney 49814x is an anodized kick plate in a fixed 8 inch by 34 inch size, so it is a stock-size aluminum-finish plate rather than a cut-to-spec stainless one.
10) Are the edges of these plates finished so they won't cut hands or snag a mop?
Every K Series plate is pencil beveled on all four sides as standard, so there is no raw sheared edge. If you want a more pronounced eased edge, the HB heavy bevel option is available, and it comes standard on the KS stretcher plates.
11) Should I use a stainless plate or a plastic one on a high abuse door?
Stainless takes the hit better and cleans up in a hospital or foodservice corridor. Where you want impact absorption or a colored plate, Trimco's K6000 is a plastic kick plate at 1/8 inch thick and it runs 4 to 48 inches high, so it covers mop, kick and armor heights in one model. Stainless in .050 or heavier is the usual call for schools, retail and industrial openings.
12) Are Trimco protection plates made in the USA, and can I get them in solid brass or bronze?
They are manufactured in the United States. Material choices are stainless steel (SS), brass (BR), bronze (BZ) and aluminum (AI), so if you are matching a historic building with brass or bronze trim you can get the plate in the same base metal rather than a plated look-alike. The 630 satin stainless build is solid stainless.
13) Does the Delaney kick plate come with mounting screws like the Trimco plate?
The Delaney 49634x and 49814x kick plates are both supplied with screws as part of the item. Trimco's K program handles fasteners by plate type, with the KS stretcher plates including countersinking and oval head screws as standard; the KA038 armor plate is furnished pencil beveled on all four edges, with countersinking available as an option. If you want the plate and fasteners packed together in a fixed size, the Delaney plates are sold that way.
