Trimco TRI-KA038-8 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes do Trimco KA038 armor plates come in?
Three sizes are offered on the KA038 Series: 8 x 34 inches, 12 x 34 inches, and 34 x 34 inches. The 34 inch dimension is the width that sits across a standard door, so the other number is the height up the face. An 8 inch plate is the usual kick height at the bottom rail, 12 inch buys more coverage where carts and mop buckets hit, and the 34 x 34 is a full armor plate for the lower half of a door taking heavy traffic. Size down the width if the door is narrower than the plate, since these are cut to a fixed size.
2) What material and finish are Trimco KA038 protection plates?
Stainless steel, in 630 satin stainless. That is the standard commercial finish a spec writer calls out for corridor and back-of-house doors, and it matches 630 hinges, push plates and pulls already hung on most commercial openings. Stainless takes wet mopping and disinfectant cleaning without staining the way a coated or anodized aluminum plate will, which is why it turns up in healthcare and food service.
3) Are these plates thick enough for a hospital or school corridor door?
Standard material on Trimco protection plates is heavy duty .050 inch, which is the common commercial gauge for corridor and high-traffic doors. Heavier material is available as an option in .062 inch and .125 inch, and a lighter .038 inch is offered where the plate is more cosmetic than protective. For gurney and cart traffic in healthcare, or a K-12 hallway, .050 in stainless is the normal call; step up to .125 only where equipment is repeatedly ramming the door.
4) Can I get a Trimco protection plate with a UL label for a fire door?
UL labeling is one of the options Trimco offers on its protection plates, alongside heavy bevel, countersinking and security screws. You have to call it out when you order, since it is an option rather than a standard feature, so specify UL labeling on the line if the plate is going on a labeled fire door assembly.
5) What can I use instead of a Trimco KA038 armor plate on a door that only needs a short kick plate at the bottom?
For a shallow plate the Delaney 6 inch by 34 inch kick plate covers a 34 inch door leaf at a 6 inch height, below the 8 inch minimum the Trimco KA038 starts at. That keeps coverage to the toe-kick zone on a door where a taller plate would run into a lite, a louver or a rail. The Trimco KA038 is the choice when you want the taller 12 inch or full 34 inch by 34 inch armor coverage instead.
6) Can I order a Trimco armor plate cut for a door with a lock or a vision lite cutout?
Custom cutouts, sizes and shapes are available on Trimco's protection plates, so a tall armor plate can be ordered notched around an exit device, a mortise lock case, a pull or a lite. This is where the KA038 separates from a stock kick plate: on a 34 x 34 plate the hardware almost always lands inside the plate area, and a cutout keeps you from cutting it in the field and leaving a raw edge.
7) What screws come with a Trimco protection plate and can I get tamper resistant ones?
Fasteners ship with the plate, packed separately in damage resistant packaging so the screws do not scuff the finish in transit. Security screws are available as an option, which is what you want in a school, a transit facility or any door the public can reach, since a standard oval head comes out with a screwdriver. Countersinking is also an option if you need the heads to sit flush in the plate face.
8) What is a cheaper 8 x 34 kick plate alternative to the Trimco KA038?
The Delaney 8 inch x 34 inch Anodized Kick Plate with Screws covers the same opening in the same footprint and ships with its screws. The tradeoff is material: it is an anodized plate, where the Trimco KA038 is stainless steel in 630 satin finish with pencil beveled edges standard. For a light duty office or apartment door the Delaney is the simpler buy; for a corridor getting cart traffic or one being wet mopped, stay with stainless. Delaney also lists a 6 inch x 34 inch kick plate if you need a shorter band than the 8 inch Trimco.
9) I need a 34 inch tall armor plate, will a standard kick plate work instead?
No. The Delaney kick plates are 6 x 34 and 8 x 34, so they only cover the bottom band of the door and leave the face above the bottom rail bare. If carts, beds or hand trucks are hitting the door higher up, you need the 34 x 34 Trimco KA038 armor plate, or the 12 x 34 as a middle step. Stacking two kick plates is not a substitute, since the seam leaves an exposed edge right where the impact lands.
10) Will these plates match the finish on the rest of my hardware if I am standardizing a building?
The KA038 Series is supplied in 630 satin stainless steel, which is the most widely specified commercial finish and lines up with the 630 hinges, exit device trim, push plates and pulls typically already on a commercial opening. If your building was specified in 630, these drop in without a finish mismatch across doors. Trimco does make protection plates in brass and bronze material as well, if the building standard is a brass finish rather than stainless.
11) I need a protection plate for a commercial door in a school corridor. How do I choose between the Trimco KA038 and a Delaney kick plate?
The Trimco KA038 is a commercial-rated stainless steel plate, ADA compliant, made in the USA, and offered in 8 by 34, 12 by 34 and 34 by 34 for K-12 schools, hospitality and other high-traffic buildings, with UL labeling, heavy bevel, countersinking and security screws available as options. The Delaney 6 by 34 and 8 by 34 kick plates come with their screws and cover the short end of the height range. For a corridor door taking cart and foot traffic above the toe line, the taller Trimco sizes put metal where the damage actually lands; where only the bottom few inches need protecting, the shorter Delaney heights fit.
