Trimco TRI-KM050-628-1x48 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between a mop plate and a kick plate?
Height is the difference. A mop plate is the short one, 6 inches high or less, and it goes on the bottom of the door (often the push side or the bottom edge of the stile area) to take mop and bucket damage in corridors and restrooms. A kick plate is taller, typically 8 to 10 inches, and takes foot and cart impact. Trimco's KM Series is the mop plate line, specified at 6 inches high or less, and it runs 1 through 6 inches. If carts and foot traffic are your damage source rather than wet mopping, spec a kick plate instead.
2) How thick is the Trimco KM050 mop plate, and when should I use .038 or .064 instead?
The KM050 is .050 inch material, which is Trimco's standard protection plate gauge and the usual pick for commercial corridors. The same mop plate is built in .038 inch (KM038) for lighter duty or budget work where the plate is mostly cosmetic, and .064 inch (KM064) where the door takes real abuse. Trimco also offers .125 inch and custom thicknesses on the protection plate line. All three mop plate models are 6 inches high or less.
3) Will a Trimco mop plate match my existing satin stainless door hardware?
Satin stainless steel (630) is one of nine finishes on the KM Series mop plate, and it's the finish that matches most commercial lever and closer hardware in a school or office building. The full range is 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 628 clear anodize, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless and 710CU Steralloy in a silver color. If you're standardizing a building, order the same finish number across every opening rather than matching by eye.
4) Are Trimco mop plates ADA compliant?
Yes, the KM Series mop plate is ADA compliant. That matters on the bottom of a door because ADA calls for a smooth surface across the low portion of a push-side door face, and the plate's pencil bevel on all four edges, standard on Trimco protection plates, keeps the leading edge from catching. Note that a mop plate at 6 inches or less does not by itself cover the full 10 inch smooth-surface zone; that is what a taller kick plate is for.
5) Does the Trimco KM mop plate come with screws, or do I order fasteners separately?
Fasteners ship with the plate. Trimco packs protection plates in damage resistant packaging that separates the fasteners from the plate so the face doesn't get scratched in transit, which is worth something when the plate is a polished brass finish. If you need tamper resistance on a school or public restroom door, security screws are an available option, as is countersinking.
6) Can I get a UL labeled mop plate for a fire rated door?
UL labeling is an available option on Trimco's protection plates, so it is ordered rather than standard. If the opening is fire rated, call the UL label out on the order; a plate without it can put the door's label in question. Heavy bevel and countersinking are ordered the same way.
7) What material is the Trimco KM050 mop plate made from?
Stainless steel is the substrate on the KM050. Trimco builds the protection plate line in the USA from stainless, brass, bronze or aluminum, which is why the finish list spans brass and bronze numbers as well as the stainless ones. For a wet-mopped corridor or a restroom door, stainless is the material that holds up to the cleaning chemicals.
8) I need a mop plate cut around a door bottom sweep or an odd door shape. Can Trimco do that?
Custom cutouts, sizes and shapes are available on the Trimco K Series protection plates, so a notch around a sweep, an astragal, or a non-rectangular bottom rail can be fabricated rather than field-cut. Field cutting a finished plate ruins the bevel and leaves a raw edge, so on a visible opening it is worth ordering the cutout. Heavy bevel is also available if you want a stronger chamfer than the standard pencil bevel.
9) Is the Trimco KM mop plate suitable for a school or hospital corridor, or is it a residential part?
It's a commercial part. Trimco lists the KM Series protection plates for commercial and industrial buildings, hospitality, K-12 schools, office buildings, and retail and strip malls. A property manager standardizing a portfolio can run the same finish and height across all of those door types. Residential interior doors rarely see the mop traffic that justifies the plate at all.
10) What is Trimco 710CU Steralloy and why would I pick it over stainless on a mop plate?
710CU Steralloy is one of the nine finishes offered on the KM Series mop plate, in a silver color that reads close to stainless. It's a copper-bearing alloy finish, which is why it turns up on healthcare and food service specifications where touched surfaces matter. On the bottom of a door it's a specification choice more than a wear choice, since the standard 630 satin stainless carries the same .050 inch plate.
