Trine 3478F-24DC-32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the 3478F work with a mortise lock or only cylindrical?
Cylindrical locksets only. The 3478F keeper is built for the latchbolt of a cylindrical lock, so if the door carries a mortise lock with a deadlatch and auxiliary bolt you need a different strike. For mortise openings, the Von Duprin 6210 or the 6400 Series covers it, and the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike listed for both cylindrical and mortise locks.
2) Can I use a fail safe electric strike on a fire rated door?
Not this one. The 3478F carries the Warnock Hersey fire listing in fail secure only, and Trine states outright that the WH listing is void when the unit is set to fail safe action. On a labeled fire door opening, order the fail secure version, which is offered in 12 VDC and 24 VDC in both 630 satin stainless and dark bronze powder coat. Fail safe on this strike is for non-rated openings where the door has to release on power loss.
3) What fire rating does the Trine 3478F electric strike carry?
Class A, 3 hour, on a single door and frame configuration. It is Warnock Hersey recognized to UL10C Fire Tests of Door Assemblies, and also covered under UBC 7-2, CAN4 S104, and NFPA 252 (1999 issue). That combination is what a facility inspector looks for on a labeled opening. The rating holds on the fail secure configuration only.
4) Can I install a Trine 3478F strike on an exterior gate or an outdoor door?
No. Trine states the 3478F is not for outdoor use, and our spec record lists it as not outdoor rated. For a gate or an exposed opening, the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is built as an outdoor rated electric gate strike. Note that the Camden gate strike is not fire rated, which is not a problem outdoors but rules it out for a labeled interior opening.
5) Is the Trine 3478F 12 volt or 24 volt, and do I pick that when I order?
You pick it at order time, and it is not field changeable on this model. The 3478F ships as either 12 VDC or 24 VDC, both available in 630 satin stainless and dark bronze powder coat, fail safe or fail secure. Match it to whatever your access control power supply puts out. If you would rather stock one part that covers both, the Von Duprin 4211 is a cylindrical lock strike with field selectable 12/24 VDC, and the Dortronics 3300 Series runs 12/24 VDC on the same 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI prep.
6) I need a fire rated electric strike but my frame is an aluminum storefront jamb. Will the 3478F work?
No. The 3478F is cut for the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ANSI prep in hollow metal or wood frames and works with cylindrical locksets, which is not what an aluminum storefront jamb with a narrow stile door carries. For aluminum jambs, look at the Adams Rite 7100, 7160, or 7170, all with a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch faceplate. Be aware those three are not fire rated, so if the opening is labeled you need the Adams Rite 7240, which is fire rated for cylindrical locksets.
7) What is a direct equivalent to the Trine 3478F fire rated electric strike for a cylindrical lock in a 4-7/8 inch ANSI frame prep?
The Von Duprin 4211 32D is the closest straight equivalent: it is a Grade 1, heavy duty, fire rated electric strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable voltage. The Trine 3478F covers the same opening - fire rated, cylindrical lock type, 4-7/8 inch faceplate, BHMA Grade 1 heavy duty, offered in 12 VDC and 24 VDC. The difference in ordering is that the 4211 selects voltage in the field while the 3478F is ordered as a 12 VDC or 24 VDC unit.
8) My opening has a surface vertical rod or rim exit device, not a cylindrical lockset - what replaces the Trine 3478F there?
The Trine 3478F is a cylindrical lock strike. For surface vertical rods, the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete Grade 1 electric strike pac built for surface vertical rods. For a rim exit device, the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount electric strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt in stainless steel construction, and the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike. 9) I need a fire rated electric strike that works with a mortise lock, not a cylindrical one - what should I use instead of the Trine 3478F?
The Trine 3478F is built for cylindrical locks. For a mortise lock on a fire rated opening, the Von Duprin 6210 is a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike for mortise locks, 24 VDC fail-secure, UL 10C fire rated. The Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike that covers both cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24 VDC dual voltage, and the Securitron MUNL is a Grade 1 fire rated mortise unlatch strike. 10) The Trine 3478F is fail safe on my order and my inspector flagged the fire door - what fire rated strike can I run fail safe instead?
On the Trine 3478F the fail safe action voids the WH fire listing, so a fail safe 3478F is not the part for a rated opening.
