Trine EN400RPCM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Trine EN400RPCM electric strike on an exterior gate?
That is what the EN400RPCM kit is built for. It ships with a weldable steel gatebox, so you can mount it into a gate frame or post rather than a prepped door jamb, and the strike itself carries a UL 1034 Indoor/Outdoor Burglary Resistant listing. It is also UL 294 (6th Edition) listed for access control use.
2) Will the Trine EN400RPCM work with a rim panic exit device, or only with a cylindrical or mortise lock?
Both. The CMRP kit ships with the standard CM keeper for cylindrical and mortise latches plus the RP latch used with rim panic exit devices, so one part number covers either opening. One caveat: the UL 10C fire rating only applies when the CM latch is installed. With the RP latch in place it is not 10C rated.
3) Is the Trine EN400 strike fire rated for a 3-hour opening?
UL 10C Listed, Class A, 3-hour, single swing door, but only when the CM latch is installed. Swap in the RP latch for a rim panic and the 10C rating no longer applies. It also holds NYC MEA 79-01-E approval.
4) Is the Trine EN400RPCM fail safe or fail secure, and can I change it in the field?
It ships configured fail secure, meaning the door stays locked when power drops. On DC units the mode is field reversible, so an installer can convert it to fail safe without a different part number. Handing is field reversible too, left or right.
5) Can I use the Trine EN400RPCM on an aluminum storefront jamb?
It is not the part for a narrow aluminum jamb. The EN400RPCM is a commercial strike built around a 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch ANSI faceplate with a weldable gatebox, aimed at gates and exterior hollow metal work. For aluminum jambs, look at the Adams Rite 7100 or 7160 Series, both of which use a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch faceplate and are made for aluminum jambs; note neither is fire rated.
6) Is there another outdoor rated gate strike besides the Trine EN400RPCM?
The Camden CX-ED1959 series is also an outdoor rated electric gate strike. The difference that decides most gate jobs is fire rating: the Camden CX-ED1959 is not fire rated, while the EN400RPCM is, and it is UL 10C listed for Class A 3-hour single swing doors when the CM latch is used. If the gate is purely exterior and no fire label is involved, the Camden is a straight functional alternative; if the same part number also has to cover rated openings in the building, the Trine covers both.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the Trine EN400RPCM for an interior door where an outdoor rating is not needed?
For an interior opening with a cylindrical or mortise lock, the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks with a 3-Hour UL 10C fire rating in fail-secure, in satin stainless steel. The Hager 2930 is another fire rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24VDC dual voltage and field reversible fail safe/fail secure operation. The EN400RPCM covers the same cylindrical or mortise lock types with a 4-7/8 inch faceplate, but it is outdoor rated and ships with a weldable steel gatebox, which an interior frame install does not need.
8) Which strikes look like alternatives to the Trine EN400RPCM but will not work on an exterior gate or a fire rated opening?
Several 4-7/8 inch strikes are frame-specific or unrated. The Adams Rite 7100 and 7160 are built for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 in by 4-7/8 in faceplate and are not fire rated, and the Adams Rite 7170 is the hollow metal and wood jamb version, also not fire rated. The RCI 15BS is an economy fail-secure strike for a special offset latch entry and is not fire rated. None of those carry the outdoor rating or the weldable gatebox the EN400RPCM ships with, so they are not gate substitutes.
9) What voltage does the Trine EN400RPCM run on, and will it work on PoE?
The kit is dual voltage, 12 and 24 VDC. At 12VDC it draws 0.280 amps across 43.0 ohms; at 24VDC it draws 0.150 amps across 164.0 ohms. Both are rated intermittent or continuous duty and run silent. The low 24 volt draw is why Trine flags it as PoE friendly. Wire leads are orange/white on the 12 volt unit and black/white on the 24 volt.
10) How much force will the Trine EN400 strike hold, and how many cycles is it good for?
UL tested to over 2,000 pounds of static strength, with a rated life over 1,000,000 cycles. It is a Grade 1 strike using a one piece locking mechanism driven by a single solenoid, which is the reason it holds up on a gate that gets hit hard and often.
11) I only need a rim panic strike outdoors, not the gatebox. Is there a slimmer Trine option?
Yes. For a more traditional outdoor rated rim panic strike, Trine lists the EN800 at 3/4 inch thick and the EN850 at 1/2 inch thick. Go that route when you have a normal frame and do not need the weldable gatebox that comes with the EN400RPCM kit.
12) Do I need to order the gatebox separately with the Trine EN400RPCM?
No. The CMRP kit is the complete package: the weldable steel gatebox, the RP latch for rim panic devices, and 12/24 VDC operation are all included. You supply power and the frame or gate prep.
13) I only need a rim panic strike, not the gatebox - what should I order instead of the EN400RPCM?

14) What is a simpler strike than the Trine EN400RPCM for a cylindrical lockset on a standard ANSI prep?
For a plain cylindrical lock opening, the Von Duprin 4211 32D is a Grade 1 heavy duty fire rated strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable voltage, and the Adams Rite 7240 is a fire-rated strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection. The Dortronics 3300 Series uses a strike plate for ANSI prep measuring 4-7/8 in by 1-1/4 in with 12/24VDC and a latch bolt sensing switch.
