Ty-Rap TY38MX – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What bundle diameter will the Ty-Rap TY38M panel mount cable tie handle?
The Ty-Rap TY38M handles bundles from 3.5mm up to 44mm, so it covers everything from a single control wire up to a fairly heavy harness in a panel. Both the natural (TY38M) and UV-resistant black (TY38MX) versions carry the same 3.5-44mm range.
2) Should I use the natural or the black Ty-Rap TY38M tie?
Pick by exposure, not looks. The natural nylon TY38M is for indoor panels and enclosures. The TY38MX is UV-resistant black, which is what you want anywhere the tie sees sunlight or outdoor light exposure, such as rooftop equipment or an exterior-mounted enclosure. Inside a control cabinet either works.
3) How does a panel mount cable tie attach, and do I get screws with it?
The TY38M has an integral mounting head that fastens to the panel or enclosure wall, so the tie anchors the bundle to the surface instead of just cinching it. The screw or fastener that goes through the mounting hole is not part of the tie, so plan on supplying your own hardware to match your panel.
4) What is the steel barb in a Ty-Rap tie actually for?
The locking pawl is steel rather than molded nylon. It bites into the strap and holds, so the tie does not back off under vibration or when the bundle is flexed during service. That is the main reason these get specified in industrial control panels over an all-plastic tie.
5) Is this the winged or non-winged version of the Ty-Rap panel mount tie?
This is the without-wing style. The head sits flat and low against the mounting surface, which matters when you are stacking bundles close together or routing in a shallow wireway where a winged head would foul the adjacent run.
6) Can I use a panel mount cable tie instead of a separate adhesive base and standard tie?
Yes, and it is the more secure option. A one-piece mounting-head tie is mechanically fastened through the panel, so it does not depend on adhesive that can release with heat or on a dirty surface. The tradeoff is that you have to be able to drill or already have a hole, whereas an adhesive base needs no prep.
7) What material are Ty-Rap TY38M cable ties made from, and where are they made?
The strap is nylon/polyamide 6.6, the standard material for electrical cable ties, and these are made in the United States. Nylon 6.6 is what gives the tie its tensile strength and makes it acceptable for indoor panel and data installations.
8) Are Ty-Rap TY38M ties suitable for data center and telecom cable bundles?
They are used for telecommunications equipment installs and data center cable organization, along with electrical panels and industrial control panel wiring. For low-voltage data bundles, cinch only to the point the bundle is captured, since over-tightening nylon ties on copper data cable can deform the pairs.
