Von Duprin 50634 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Von Duprin 5547-F extension rod kit on a fire rated opening?
No. The 050634 extension rod kit is carried as non fire rated, so it should not be used to service a device on a labeled fire door assembly. For fire rated openings, the device and its rods have to be the labeled parts specified for that assembly.
2) Is there a vertical rod part for a tall door that works with a Falcon concealed vertical rod device instead of Von Duprin?
The Von Duprin 050634 5547-F extension rod kit is built for the 55/88 Series exit device platform and should be used only on that platform. If the device in the opening is a Falcon concealed vertical rod unit, the corresponding rod part is the Falcon 610061 24 Series Monarch concealed vertical top rod for F-25-C and F-25-CWDC exit devices. The two are not interchangeable - match the rod part to the device brand and series already in the door.
3) My double doors are over 10 feet tall and I want to avoid vertical rods entirely - what can I use instead?
The Von Duprin 050634 5547-F extension rod kit is the route for keeping a vertical rod device on a 10 foot to 12 foot door. The alternative approach on a pair of doors is a removable mullion with rim devices, such as the Falcon 4023 steel mullion for double door exit device applications, which lets each leaf carry a rim device rather than top and bottom rods. Falcon 525 aluminum mullion stabilizers are the related accessory for mullion installations.
4) Is this a Grade 1 commercial part?
Yes. The Von Duprin 5547-F extension rod kit is a Grade 1 commercial replacement part, which is the heaviest duty classification for door hardware and the level normally specified for schools, hospitals and other high traffic buildings.
5) Do I need a whole new exit device for a 12 foot door, or just this rod kit?
If the 55/88 Series device itself is sound and only the vertical rod travel is short for the opening, the 5547-F kit is the service part that gets you there, restoring rod alignment and latch retraction travel on doors 10 to 12 feet tall. A new device is only needed if the chassis or latches are the problem.
6) I have a pair of tall doors with no mullion. Does this kit help?
The 5547-F kit only extends the rods on a 55/88 Series vertical rod device; it does not address the center of a pair. Vertical rod devices latch at the head and threshold, so a pair without a mullion is normally handled with vertical rod devices on both leaves. If you are running rim devices instead, you need a mullion such as the Falcon 4023 steel mullion, with the Falcon 525 aluminum mullion stabilizers where those apply.
7) I need a fire rated assembly - is the 050634 extension rod kit or one of the alternatives the right call?
The Von Duprin 050634 5547-F extension rod kit carries a fire rating value of No, as do the Accentra 7110/7120 and 7110F top latch replacement components. For a fire rated opening, confirm the labeled device and part combination with the door and device manufacturer before ordering any of them.
8) What is actually in the Von Duprin 050634 order?
It is one kit, model 050634, the 5547-F extension rod hardware for 55/88 Series exit devices. There are no finish or size choices to specify; the door height range of 10 to 12 feet is what defines the kit.
