Von Duprin 50639 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door height does the Von Duprin 050639 extension rod kit cover?
The 050639 kit extends the vertical rods on a Von Duprin 55 Series exit device for doors from 10 ft to 12 ft in height. Standard 55 Series rods cover doors up to normal commercial heights, so this kit is what you add when the leaf is taller than the factory rod length. If your door is under 10 ft, this is not the kit you need.
2) Will the 050639 rod kit work on any brand of surface vertical rod exit device?
No. The 050639 extension rod kit is built for Von Duprin 55 Series exit devices only. Rod diameter, connector threads and top/bottom latch geometry differ between manufacturers and even between Von Duprin series, so it won't drop onto another brand's device or a different Von Duprin series.
3) Can I use this Von Duprin extension rod kit on a fire rated door assembly?
The 050639 is a non fire rated component. For a labeled fire door opening you need fire rated exit device hardware and fire rated parts throughout the assembly, so don't specify this kit there.
4) Can I use the Von Duprin 050639 on a fire-rated opening?
The Von Duprin 050639 extension rod kit carries a fire rating of No, so it is a non-fire-rated commercial part. Several comparable exit device components are in the same position - the Accentra 7110/7120 and 7110F top latch replacement components also carry a fire rating of No. For a labeled opening, specify a component the label permits rather than substituting a non-rated part.
5) Is the 050639 extension rod kit rated for high traffic commercial openings?
It's a Grade 1 commercial part, which is the heaviest duty ANSI/BHMA classification for door hardware and the level normally specified for schools, hospitals and other high traffic buildings. It's catalogued as commercial only, not residential.
6) I'm replacing a bent vertical rod on a 55 Series device, is this the right part?
Only if the door is 10 to 12 ft tall. The 050639 is an extension rod kit for oversized 55 Series openings, catalogued as a replacement part for that device platform. A standard height door needs the standard length rod for your device, not this extension kit.
7) What's the difference between an extension rod kit and a concealed vertical rod?
The Von Duprin 050639 is for surface applied 55 Series vertical rod hardware, where the rods run on the face of the door and simply get longer for a taller leaf. Concealed vertical rod devices run the rod inside the door stile and use their own rod part, for example the Falcon 610061 24 Series Monarch concealed vertical top rod for F-25-C and F-25-CWDC devices. The two are not interchangeable, so match the part to how the rod is mounted on your existing door.
8) My 55 Series device latches at the top but the rod is too short for a 12 ft door - what do I order?
The Von Duprin 050639 is the extension rod kit that covers doors from 10 ft to 12 ft on Von Duprin 55 Series exit devices, so it addresses rod length rather than the latch itself. If the problem is the top latch rather than rod reach, that is a different component - on Accentra devices, for example, the top latch is a separate replacement component such as the 7110/7120 top latch or the 7110F top latch. Confirm whether you need length or a latch before ordering.
9) Will the Von Duprin 050639 help with a pair of doors that needs a mullion?
No - the 050639 is an extension rod kit for Von Duprin 55 Series exit devices on doors 10 ft to 12 ft tall, which is a single-door vertical rod part. For a double-door opening the corresponding item is a mullion: the Falcon 4023 is a steel mullion for double door exit device applications, and the Falcon 525 aluminum mullion stabilizers are the related accessory. Those solve the pair-of-doors problem; the rod kit does not.
10) What if the latch on my exit device is worn rather than the rod - is there a deadlatch replacement?
The Von Duprin 050639 extension rod kit is a Grade 1 commercial replacement part that addresses vertical rod reach on 55 Series devices for 10 ft to 12 ft doors. A worn latch is a separate item: Falcon offers a T Series 2-3/8 inch square corner deadlatch replacement part for that family. Identify whether the failure is at the rod or the latch, then order to the device series on the door.
11) Does the 050639 kit include the top and bottom latches too?
It's a rod kit, supplied to extend rod reach on a 55 Series device for a 10 to 12 ft door. Latch assemblies are separate components; on other platforms those are ordered individually, such as the Accentra 7110/7120 exit device top latch replacement component. If your top or bottom latch is damaged as well, order that part in addition to the rod kit.
12) Is a rim cylinder housing an alternative to the 050639 rod kit?
No. The Von Duprin 050639 is a 55 Series extension rod kit that sets vertical rod length for doors 10 ft to 12 ft high. A part like the Arrow 16RCR-27 is a 6/7-pin SFIC rim housing in the 24/25 Series - a cylinder component for keyed outside access, not a rod. They address different parts of an exit device and neither substitutes for the other.
