Von Duprin 971249 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Von Duprin 971497 locking plunger fit exit devices other than the 230L?
No. The 971497 locking plunger is built for the Von Duprin 230L Series exit device only. If the device on your door is a 33A/35A, 98/99, or any other Von Duprin family, this part is not the one to order. Check the model stamped on the device or its instruction sheet before buying, because 230L parts are not interchangeable across series.
2) Is the Von Duprin 971497 a genuine OEM part or an aftermarket copy?
It's the genuine Von Duprin part, made to the factory specification for the 230L Series, so it drops into the device without filing, shimming, or modification. For property managers and institutional maintenance shops that standardize on Von Duprin, that matters: an aftermarket plunger can bind in the case and put the device out of service again.
3) What does the locking plunger actually do on a 230L exit device?
The plunger is the locking component inside the 230L device; when it wears or sticks, the device stops securing or releasing properly. Replacing the 971497 restores that locking function without having to pull and replace the whole exit device, which is why it's a common stock item for MRO and maintenance carts.
4) Do I get the whole exit device or just the plunger when I order 971497?
Just the plunger. The 971497 is a single replacement component for an existing Von Duprin 230L device, not a complete exit device and not a trim or rail kit. If the chassis or rail is damaged as well, you'll need those parts separately.
5) Is this part rated for a high-traffic commercial opening?
Yes, it's a heavy duty, commercial-rated component, intended for the kind of traffic you see in schools, hospitals, offices, retail, warehouses, and government buildings. It is not a light-duty or residential part.
6) Can I buy several 971497 plungers to keep on hand for a building full of 230L devices?
That's a normal way to buy it. Facilities that have standardized on the Von Duprin 230L across multiple openings commonly stock the 971497 as a spare, since it's the same part for every 230L device regardless of where it's installed. One part number covers the whole fleet of 230L openings.
