1) Will the Von Duprin E7500 work with any exit device, or only certain ones?
The E7500 electric unlocking mortise lock is built for Von Duprin 98/99 Series devices only. It is the mortise lock case that goes inside a 98/99 mortise exit device, not a standalone lock and not a retrofit for rim or vertical rod devices. If your opening has a 98 or 99 rim device, a surface vertical rod, or another manufacturer's exit device, the E7500 is the wrong part.
2) Should I order the E7500 fail safe or fail secure?
Both are offered, and the choice comes down to what you want the outside trim to do when power drops. FS (fail safe) unlocks the outside trim on power loss, which is what an opening on a fire alarm release or a free-egress-plus-free-entry requirement usually needs. FSE (fail secure) keeps the outside trim locked when power drops, so the door stays secure and entry is by key. Either way the latch bolt stays projected and the door remains latched, so the door's fire rating is preserved in both modes. Egress from the inside is always free through the push bar.
