Von Duprin VON-9847NL 3 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Von Duprin 9847NL-3 work on a 36 inch wide door?
Yes. The 9847NL-3 is sized for 36 inch door widths, and it covers door heights from 80 inches up to 100 inches. If your opening is narrower than 36 inches or taller than 100 inches, you need a different device size rather than this one.
2) What does the NL in Von Duprin 9847NL-3 mean for outside entry?
NL is the nightlatch function. Egress from the inside is always free through the pushpad, and from the outside a key retracts the latch for controlled entry. The 9847NL-3 ships with an escutcheon pull on the outside, so the door can be pulled open once the key releases the latch. There is no outside lever or thumbpiece with this trim.
3) Is the 9847NL-3 a wide stile or narrow stile exit device?
Wide stile. The pushpad is built for the wider stiles found on hollow metal and wide-stile aluminum doors. On a narrow stile storefront door there is not enough face width for a wide stile chassis, so measure your stile before ordering and go to a narrow stile device if it comes up short.
4) Can a pair of doors be secured with the 9847NL-3 without a center mullion?
Yes. Because it latches into the frame head and the floor or threshold rather than a strike jamb, a concealed vertical rod device works on a pair of doors with no center mullion. Each leaf gets its own device.
5) Why choose a concealed vertical rod exit device instead of a surface vertical rod or a rim device?
Concealed vertical rod, like the 9847 arrangement, latches at the head and the sill with the rods hidden inside the door, so the door face stays clean. That means the door has to be prepped for concealed rods, usually a hollow metal or aluminum door built for it. A surface vertical rod device mounts the rods on the door face and can be retrofit to a door with no internal prep. A rim device latches only at the strike jamb and is the simpler choice on a single door or a pair with a mullion.
6) Can I hold the 9847NL-3 pushpad down during business hours?
Yes, it has hex key dogging. A hex key holds the latch retracted so the door pushes open freely while the building is open, then you undog it for after-hours security. Hex key dogging is mechanical, so on a fire rated opening dogging is not permitted and you would need the cylinder dogging or non-dogging arrangement instead.
7) Is the Von Duprin 9847NL-3 strong enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is a Grade 1 device, the top performance class for commercial exit hardware, and the wide stile pushpad gives a broad activation surface for constant use. Typical placements are school and office main doors, healthcare corridors, retail, warehouse, and government buildings.
8) What finishes does the Von Duprin 9847NL-3 exit device come in?
Twelve finishes, so you can match existing hardware across a building: 626/US26D satin chrome, 625/US26 bright chrome, 630/US32D stainless steel, 628/US28 satin aluminum clear anodized, 313/710 dark bronze anodized aluminum, 315/335 black anodized aluminum, 643E/US11E aged bronze, 612/US10 satin bronze clear coated, 613/US10B dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, 619/US15 satin nickel plated clear coated, 605/US3 bright brass, and 606/US4 satin brass. For aluminum storefront, 313 and 315 are the usual matches; 626 is the standard commercial choice on hollow metal.
