Von Duprin 425 SP313 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What are Von Duprin 425 sex bolts used for on an exit device?
They're the through-bolt fasteners that hold exit device trim to the door. A sex bolt is a two-piece fastener: a barrel goes in from one face of the door and a machine screw threads into it from the other, so the trim is clamped through the door rather than held by screws biting into the door itself. The Von Duprin 425 set is the 10-24 thread version used on Von Duprin exit device trim, and it comes two to a package.
2) What thread size are the Von Duprin 425 sex bolts, and will a standard 10-24 screw thread into them?
Thread size is 10-24, so any 10-24 machine screw threads into the barrel. That's the same thread Von Duprin uses on its exit device trim mounting screws, which is why these are the ones to order if a trim screw has been stripped out and the barrel is chewed. If the screws coming out of your existing trim are a different thread, these aren't the fastener for that opening.
3) My exit device trim is loose and spins on the door. Do I need new trim or just new fasteners?
Start with the fasteners. Loose or spinning trim is usually a stripped sex bolt barrel or a missing screw, not a failed trim casting. The 425 sex bolts are the 10-24 replacement fastener for Von Duprin exit device trim and are sold in a package of 2, which is what one trim takes. Pull the trim, check whether the barrel threads are stripped, and if they are, replacing the bolt set fixes the opening without touching the device.
4) How many Von Duprin 425 sex bolts come in a pack, and how many do I need per door?
Two per package. Exit device trim is typically fastened at two points through the door, so one package covers one trim on one leaf. If you're rekeying or replacing trim across a run of openings, count the packages by door, not by device, and remember a pair of doors is two.
5) What finishes do the Von Duprin 425 sex bolts come in?
Four: 606/US4 satin brass, 612/US10 satin bronze, 630/US32D satin stainless steel, and 695/SP313 dark bronze anodized aluminum. Match the bolt head to the trim it's going through, not to the door, since the head is what shows on the pull side. 630/US32D is the one that matches most commercial satin stainless trim.
6) Are the Von Duprin 425 sex bolts a Von Duprin part or a generic fastener?
Genuine Von Duprin, ordered as the 425 sex bolt set for exit device trim. If you're maintaining a building standardized on Von Duprin exit devices and you want the trim fasteners to match the original equipment in thread and finish, this is the part number to keep on the shelf.
