WAC Lighting 6861-CSBK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the WAC Balance 6861-CS path light run on my existing 12V landscape transformer?
Not on its own. The Balance 6861-CS is a Colorscaping fixture that uses Power Line Communication over the 12-2 landscape wire, so it needs the Colorscaping Power Supply to carry the control signal and to dim smoothly down to 10 percent. The fixture itself accepts a 9-15V AC input on a 12V system, but a plain magnetic transformer will only power it, not give you color control from the myWAC app.
2) Do I have to pull a separate data wire for the WAC Colorscaping path light?
No. Control rides on the same two-conductor 12-2 landscape wire that feeds power, using Power Line Communication, so there is no low-voltage data run to add. Fixtures are addressed individually or in groups from the myWAC app on iOS or Android. For a retrofit that means you can often reuse the existing landscape wire path.
3) What mounting hardware comes with the 6861-CS Balance path light, and what else do I need to buy?
It ships with a 9 inch ground spike, a 3 foot lead wire, and two gel filled direct burial wire nuts, so the splice to the main run is covered out of the box. The LED is integral and included, so there is no lamp to order. What you still need is the Colorscaping Power Supply and the 12-2 landscape cable for the run.
4) Is this WAC path light OK right next to a pool or in a sprinkler zone?
Yes. The Balance 6861-CS is wet location rated, IP66, and UL and cUL 1598 listed, which covers pool perimeters, irrigated beds, and direct exposure to rain and hose spray. The supplied gel filled direct burial nuts keep the splice sealed underground as well.
5) Will the aluminum version of the Balance 6861-CS hold up at a coastal property?
The standard body is cast k-alloy aluminum, a corrosion resisting alloy WAC uses for landscape fixtures. For salt air or marine exposure WAC also offers the Balance in brass, and that is the construction called out for coastal and marine environments. On an oceanfront install, specify brass; inland, the k-alloy aluminum is the normal choice.
6) Can I get plain warm white light out of a Colorscaping RGBWW fixture, or is it only colors?
Tunable white is the primary mode. The 6861-CS runs anywhere from 2700K to 6500K, so you can hold it at a 2700K warm white year round and only use the color output when you want it. CRI is 85 on the white channels.
7) How much load does each WAC Balance 6861-CS draw when I am sizing the transformer and the run?
Each fixture is 7W, rated 10VA for transformer sizing. Size the Colorscaping Power Supply on the 10VA figure per head, not the 7W, and leave headroom for voltage drop on long 12-2 runs.
8) Is the 6861-CS a path light or an area light, and how wide does it throw?
It is a path and area light with a flood beam spread, so it washes a broad pool of light at grade rather than throwing a tight accent beam. That suits walkway and driveway edges, flower beds, and general wayfinding. For uplighting a tree or a facade you want a directional accent or well light instead.
9) What finishes does the WAC Balance 6861-CS path light come in for matching other fixtures on a property?
Two finishes: Black and Bronze. If you are standardizing a multi-building or HOA property, those are the two options to spec across the site, and the fixture style is modern with a frosted glass lens for glare control.
10) Does the Balance 6861-CS work with a standard wall dimmer?
Dimming is handled two ways: MLV (magnetic low voltage) and the myWAC app. Continuous dimming to 10 percent comes through the Colorscaping Power Supply, so in a Colorscaping system the app is the control path rather than a wall dimmer. It is a hardwired fixture, not plug-in.
11) How long before the LED in this WAC landscape light needs service?
Rated life is 50,000 hours on the integral LED module. There is no replaceable lamp, so on a maintenance schedule the fixture is a unit replacement rather than a relamp.
12) Is the WAC Balance 6861-CS Energy Star certified for a utility rebate submittal?
No, the 6861-CS is not an Energy Star listed fixture. It does carry UL and cUL 1598 listing and an IP66 wet location rating, which are the listings most inspectors want on a low-voltage landscape install.
