Watts 765-QT PVB 3/4 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and thread does the Watts 765-QT pressure vacuum breaker connect to?
Both ends are 3/4 inch female NPT threads, inlet and outlet, so it drops between 3/4 inch threaded pipe or adapters without any extra bushings. The metric equivalent on the inlet is listed as 20 mm.
2) Can I use a pressure vacuum breaker on an irrigation system where the valve stays pressurized?
Yes. The 765 series PVB is rated for continuous pressure operation, which is what separates it from an atmospheric vacuum breaker that can only be under pressure intermittently. It protects against backsiphonage only, not backpressure, so it has to be installed at least the code-required height above the highest downstream outlet.
3) Is a PVB enough for a health hazard application, or do I need an RPZ?
The Watts 765-QT is rated for health hazard protection, but only against backsiphonage. If the piping can see backpressure, for example a booster pump, an elevated tank, or a chemical injection line, a PVB is the wrong device and a reduced pressure zone assembly is required instead.
4) Can the Watts 765-QT be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The 765-QT is a bronze body device that is not lead free, so it is not suitable for potable water service under current US lead-free requirements. Use it on irrigation and non-potable applications, and specify a lead-free assembly where the line serves drinking water.
5) Does the 765-QT come with shutoff valves, or do I have to buy them separately?
Shutoffs are included on both sides, quarter turn ball valves at the inlet and the outlet, which is what the QT in the model designation means. It ships as a kit with test cock caps and tethers.
6) Will this backflow preventer survive freezing weather outdoors?
No. Minimum rated temperature is 32 degrees F, so the assembly has to be drained or removed before a freeze. Maximum is 140 degrees F. It is not built for hot or harsh water service.
7) What is the maximum working pressure on the Watts 765 vacuum breaker?
150 psi, which is 10 bar. On municipal supply running above that, a pressure reducing valve ahead of the assembly is needed.
8) Does the Watts 765-QT include a strainer or bypass?
Neither. There is no strainer, no bypass, no meter and no elbow fitting on this assembly. If the water source is a well or anything carrying grit, plan on a separate strainer upstream, and add a bypass line if the system cannot go down for annual testing.
9) Will the Watts 765 meet a Buy American requirement on a government job?
No. The 765-QT is not Buy American Act compliant, so it will not clear a federal or state spec that carries a domestic sourcing clause. Specify a domestically produced assembly for those projects.
10) What are the internal materials in the Watts 765 PVB, and how does it hold up in service?
Bronze body and bronze seat with a nitrile check disc, finished as rough bronze with no polymer coating. Nitrile is a standard elastomer for cold water irrigation duty, and the bronze seat is serviceable in the field if the check ever needs a rebuild.
