1) What size pipe does the Watts LF777SI 1-1/2 Y-strainer thread onto?
Both ends are 1-1/2 inch female NPT threads, so it screws directly onto 1-1/2 inch threaded pipe or onto male adapters off copper or PEX. Inlet and outlet are the same size (38 mm metric equivalent), so there is no reducing built into the body. No flanges, no solder cups, just NPT.
2) Is the Watts LF777SI strainer lead free and OK for potable water lines?
It is a lead free strainer. The body and retainer cover are cast from a lead free copper silicon alloy, which is what Watts uses on its potable-rated LF line. Gaskets are NBR and the screen is stainless steel, so nothing in the wetted path is brass with a lead content.
3) How fine is the screen in the LF777SI, and what will it actually catch?
20 mesh stainless steel. That is a general-purpose strainer screen, good for pipe scale, solder beads, weld slag, sand, and construction debris ahead of a pump, control valve, meter, or backflow preventer. It is not a fine filter, so it will not hold back silt or fine sediment. If you need that level of filtration, put a cartridge filter downstream and use the strainer as the coarse first stage.
4) Can I add a blowdown valve to this Watts strainer without pulling the cap off to clean it?
Yes. The retainer cover is tapped with a 3/4 inch female threaded blowdown outlet and ships with a closure plug in it. Pull the plug and thread in a 3/4 inch ball valve or hose-bib blowdown and you can flush the screen under line pressure instead of shutting down and unscrewing the cap. On a mechanical room install that is worth doing at the time of fit-up.
5) Is the Watts LF777SI Buy American Act compliant for a federal or government job?
No. The LF777SI 1-1/2 is not Buy American Act compliant, so it will not satisfy a BAA or Buy America clause on a federal, GSA, or federally funded project. On those specs you need to source a domestically produced strainer instead.

Orientation matters on any wye strainer. Flow has to go in the direction of the body arrow, and the screen pocket should point down or to the side so debris collects in the leg and drops out at blowdown. On a vertical run, it only works with downward flow, otherwise the pocket traps nothing. Leave clearance at the retainer cap end so the screen can be withdrawn for cleaning.
8) Is there an epoxy or internal coating on this bronze strainer?
None. The LF777SI body is bare lead free cast copper silicon alloy with no epoxy lining. For water service that is normal. If you are running a corrosive or treated process fluid that calls for a coated interior, this is not the body for it.
