Westinghouse Electric 7009900 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size chain will the Westinghouse fixture chain pliers open and close?
The Westinghouse 7009900 fixture chain pliers handle chain up to 3-gauge, and the tip has three positions so you can set it to the link size you are working. That covers the chain used on most hanging fixtures and pendants, from light decorative chain up through the heavier stuff carrying a substantial fixture.
2) Can I use fixture chain pliers to shorten a light fixture chain to the drop height I need?
Yes, that is the main job. Shortening a pendant or chandelier drop means opening a link, removing the excess chain, and closing the link back onto the fixture loop. The 7009900 does the open and close on links up to 3-gauge with its three tip positions. It is not a cutter, so you are separating at a link rather than cutting through steel.
3) Are these fixture chain pliers strong enough to open a link without deforming, or should I use regular lineman's pliers?
Body is steel, and the tool is purpose-shaped for chain links rather than general gripping. That is the difference worth paying for: lineman's or slip-joint pliers grab a link on two points and tend to twist it out of round, while the three-position tip on the 7009900 seats the link so it opens and closes back square. If you are hanging a fixture and want the chain to look right when it is up, use the chain pliers.
4) Are the handles insulated on these chain pliers for electrical work?
The handles are red vinyl grips, which are there for comfort and hold during extended work, not as rated electrical insulation. Treat the 7009900 as a mechanical chain tool: kill power to the fixture before you work on it, and use properly rated insulated tools for anything live.
5) Do the Westinghouse fixture chain pliers come as a single tool or in a multi-pack?
One tool per pack. The 7009900 is sold individually, so if you are outfitting a crew or stocking multiple service vans, order one per truck.
6) What is the Westinghouse fixture chain pliers part number and where are they made?
Order by Westinghouse model 7009900. Country of origin is Taiwan, and the tool is finished in silver with red vinyl handles.
