Kwikset KWI-83262-001 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Kwikset SmartKey rekeying kit work on any Kwikset lock?
No. It only works on Kwikset locks fitted with a SmartKey cylinder, which you can identify by the small tool port next to the keyway. Older Kwikset pin tumbler cylinders without that port have to be rekeyed the conventional way with a pinning kit.
2) Do I need the old key to rekey a Kwikset SmartKey lock?
Yes. The SmartKey reset sequence starts with the current working key turned in the cylinder, then the tool is inserted and the new key swapped in. If the existing key is lost, the cylinder cannot be reset with this kit and the lock or cylinder has to be replaced.
3) Can a property manager use this to key several Kwikset locks alike?
Yes, that is the usual reason to buy it. Every SmartKey cylinder you reset with the kit can be brought to the same working key, so entry sets, deadbolts and levers across a unit or a building can all run on one key, as long as each lock is a SmartKey cylinder.
