Metallics QB35 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hole does the Metallics QB35 Quik-Bit wood boring bit drill, and how deep can it reach?
The QB35 is a 1-1/2 inch diameter flat wood boring bit with a 16 inch overall length, so it bores a 1-1/2 inch hole and the long shank lets you reach through studs and joists from an awkward angle without a separate extension. Sold as a single bit.
2) Can I use the QB35 wood bit to drill through metal studs or masonry?
No. It is a wood boring bit and is ground for wood only. Metal studs call for a step bit or hole saw rated for sheet metal, and block or concrete needs a carbide masonry or SDS bit. Running this bit into steel or masonry will destroy the cutting edge in seconds.
3) Will a 1-1/2 inch bore be big enough for the cable I'm pulling through wood studs?
A 1-1/2 inch hole is generous for residential and light commercial rough-in work and will pass multiple NM cables or a run of flexible conduit through a wood stud or joist. If you only need a single cable, a smaller diameter wastes less material in the framing member; step up to the QB35's 1-1/2 inch size when you are bundling runs or pulling larger feeders.
4) Is the Metallics QB35 a flat spade-type bit or a self-feed auger?
It is a flat bit, the spade style with a paddle head and a center spur. Flat bits clear fast in wood and cost less than an auger, but they do not self-feed, so you supply the pressure. For repeated deep bores through doubled studs or treated timber, a self-feeding auger pulls itself through with less arm effort. For normal electrical rough-in through wood framing, the flat bit is what most crews run.
5) How is the Metallics QB35 bit packaged, and do I get more than one?
One bit per pouch. The QB35 ships as a single piece in a pouch, so if you are stocking a van or outfitting several electricians, order a quantity per installer rather than expecting a multi-bit set.
