Metallics QB29 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the QB29 a spade bit or an auger bit for boring studs?
It is a flat bit, also called a spade bit, not a self-feeding auger. Flat bits cut fast and clear in softwood framing and cost less to replace when you hit a nail, but they need steady pressure and they wander more than an auger on angled or deep bores. If you are boring long runs through engineered lumber or need a self-feed screw tip to pull itself through, an auger bit is the better choice. For standard 2x framing drops and panel feeds, the 7/8 inch flat bit does the job.
2) How many bits come with the Metallics QB29?
One bit per order, supplied in a pouch. If you are stocking a crew or a van, order the quantity you need per installer rather than expecting a multi-size set in the package.
3) Is the 7/8 inch Quik-Bit meant for wood only, or can I use it on metal studs?
Wood only. It is a wood boring bit, ground for timber framing, plywood and blocking. On steel studs the flat cutting edges will dull or grab, so use a step bit or a hole saw rated for sheet metal for those openings.
