1) Should I use a rabbetted threshold or a plain flat saddle at my commercial entry?
Go rabbetted when you want the seal at the door bottom handled by the threshold itself. A rabbetted profile carries a step the closed door sits down against, and on the Zero 65A the silicone stop sits at that step, so drafts and sound are cut off at the joint without fighting the door swing. A flat saddle only bridges the floor transition; you then need a separate door sweep or shoe to close the gap under the leaf. The 65A is 5 inches wide by 1/2 inch high, so the step it adds at the floor stays shallow.
2) My spec calls for a fire tested, BHMA certified threshold. What does the Zero 65A carry?
The 65A is UL classified to ANSI/UL 10C, which is the positive pressure fire test, and it is BHMA certified under ANSI/BHMA J36100 and J36130. Those are the two lines a submittal reviewer looks for on a threshold at a rated opening, so the 65A can be scheduled without a substitution request on that count.
3) Does the silicone seal come with the Zero 65A or do I order the seal separately?
The silicone seal, sometimes called the silicone stop, ships with the 65A. It is part of the assembly, not a separate line item, so ordering the threshold in the length you need gets you the sealing element as well.
4) Is the Zero 65A threshold available in dark bronze or anodized, or only mill finish?
Mill finish aluminum is the only finish on the 65A. Length is the single choice you make when ordering, 36, 48, or 72 inches, and the 5 inch by 1/2 inch extrusion is the same in each. If the opening has to match anodized or painted hardware, that is a different threshold, not an option code on this one.
5) How does the Zero 65A compare with the Pemko 61 Series interlocking J hook threshold?
Two different sealing methods. The 65A is a rabbetted saddle in aluminum, 5 inches wide by 1/2 inch high, supplied with its silicone stop, and stocked in 36, 48, and 72 inch lengths. The Pemko 61 Series is an interlocking J hook threshold accessory in steel construction at 36 inches; the interlocking type works against a mating hook member on the door bottom rather than a compression seal, so it is the one to match when the door already carries an interlocking hook. Replacing a plain saddle and want the seal built into the threshold: the 65A is the direct route.
6) I am standardizing thresholds across a building. Will the Zero 65A match what is already at my other openings?
Match it on profile, not on length. Every 65A is the same 5 inch wide by 1/2 inch high rabbetted section in mill finish aluminum, and only the length changes between 36, 48, and 72 inches. So if the thresholds already in the building sit 1/2 inch proud with a 5 inch run across the floor, the 65A drops in beside them and the floor transition reads the same door to door. Where an opening is a different width you change the length, nothing else.
7) I need a sealed threshold for an opening wider than 36 inches - what covers it in one piece?
The Zero 65A rabbetted threshold comes in 36 inch, 48 inch and 72 inch lengths, so a wide single leaf or a pair of doors can be run without splicing two pieces together, and the silicone seal comes with it. The Pemko 61 interlocking J hook threshold accessory is a 36 inch steel piece. For a sill run past 36 inches, the 65A's 48 inch and 72 inch lengths carry the opening.
8) Is the Zero 65A a commercial duty threshold or is it meant for residential doors?
Commercial. The 65A is built for commercial door openings and is rated as such, which is why it carries the UL 10C classification and BHMA certification a commercial submittal asks for. It will physically work at a residential door, but it is specified for high traffic entries in aluminum, in 36, 48, and 72 inch lengths.
9) Zero 65A or Pemko 61 - which one is the aluminum threshold?
The Zero 65A is the aluminum one, supplied in a mill finish, which is left uncoated and reads as the natural silver color of the metal. It measures 5 inches wide by 1/2 inch high. The Pemko 61 interlocking J hook threshold accessory is steel construction. Where a sill has to sit alongside other aluminum saddles already in the building, the 65A is the aluminum piece of the two.
