Watts 67457 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and type of pipe connections does the Watts 67457 radiator angle valve have?
The Watts 0067457 is a 1-1/4 inch valve on both ends. The inlet is 1-1/4 inch (32 mm) female threaded IPS, so it threads onto standard 1-1/4 inch iron pipe supply. The outlet is a 1-1/4 inch union joint, which is what lets you break the connection at the radiator spud without disturbing the supply piping.
2) Should I order an angle valve or a straight radiator valve?
Angle pattern, like the Watts 67457, is what you want when the supply riser comes up out of the floor and turns 90 degrees into the side of the radiator. That's the common arrangement in older steam buildings. If the supply comes horizontally out of the wall in line with the radiator spud, you need a straight pattern instead. The body pattern is fixed on this one, so measure the approach before ordering.
3) Do I need a separate union or radiator spud with the Watts 67457?
The union half is built into the valve outlet, so you aren't buying a separate union. What you do need is the matching tailpiece or spud threaded into the radiator, and the union nut has to seat against it. If you're reusing an existing 1-1/4 inch spud, confirm it's in good condition; old spuds often come out damaged when the valve is removed.
4) What is the maximum pressure this Watts radiator valve is rated for?
Two different ceilings apply depending on the medium: 15 PSI on steam, 60 PSI on water, with 250 degrees F maximum temperature either way. If you're specifying for a low pressure steam plant, the 15 PSI figure is the governing number and it's well above the operating pressure of a typical building steam system.
5) Is this radiator valve brass or cast iron?
Brass body. For a property manager replacing valves across a building, brass is the practical reason these hold up in steam service better than the old iron bodies, and it threads onto existing IPS iron pipe risers without a transition fitting.
